If only c.captain was here. Great news for us regardless.

A step in the right direction.

Even after his attorney’s cut, that captain did pretty well. I’m happy the case turned out the way it did. It was a good decision for Mariners all over the US.

The settlement is worth a read, it features the ship rolling 50 degrees, main deck shipping water and 100 kts winds, Capt Loftus thought he might lose the ship and the suits at Horizon lines just wanted to jack him around. He should have been awarded ten times the amount in the first place.

I read the entire judgement of the court. What the master was awarded was a pittance and will be paid by the stockholders. Someone in the management of that company should be in prison. ABS did a fine job of not biting the hand that feeds them as always. The USCG didn’t come across as much more than clueless advisors, hardly the protectors of maritime safety. ABS and USCG are textbook examples of corporate capture by those they purport to regulate. But we all knew this already. Loftus deserves a medal for having more courage than 99% of the masters sailing on crap ships.
