Where to Study for 500-2nd Mate?

Back to school…

I’ve been student at MPT in Ft. Lauderdale the last two weeks, and have really liked the 3 week deck officer test prep program they have set up. The instructor “CG” is really helpful. She’s been teaching upper level mariners for 15+ years. Last year I was at LAMPI in Houma studying with Capt. Bruce. Comparing the two…MPT is worth the higher cost. Having a structured study program where the whole class is doing the same type problems together has really helped. This year I’m confident I’ll be able to test soon after class.

The best advice for anyone interested in the MPT test prep study program is to study your Navigation Rules beforehand, brush up on your basic plotting skills (converting speed/time/distance) etc… If your working as a mate/master you should know how to plot. In class “CG” will give you a hard time if you hold a license and can’t plot a course.

Good luck all to all those studying!

Ill be going down in october for this class. Do you feel like you are ready to test after going through this class? Did they prep you for everything or mainly just the math? I am studying my deck general and deck safety with hawsepipe right now and just drilling them into my head. I guess Ill pull out the charts and start plotting as well. Im glad to hear from someone that went through this class I was in debate of which to go to MPT or houma.

Hey thanks for the info, please keep us informed of the outcome, and final review of the class. Someone with experience with both schools is a really good source of info…
Good luck on your tests, …
