Currently a Watch-standing 3AE for MSC, I have gotten my 2AE license, sailed on a few different ships, and been with MSC for about 2 & 1/2 years. I have also been actively participating with the 2AE in his duties, and I think I have a good grasp of his responsibilities, but I have never officially been the 2AE. But, When did you think you were ready for the position?
If you think you can do the job as good as, or better, than the current 2AE, you’re ready.
Why are you asking these people this question?
Two things.
Firstly, typically the 3AE job is more difficult than the 2AE.
Second, no position, no matter if it’s 3AE, 2nd, 1st or Chief will you be ready. It’s always trial by fire. Very few of these guys have ever sailed 2AE. What did you get your license for? Just do it.
The only ‘problem’ with 2AE is you are one step closer to 1AE which can be a really tough job, as it should . Had it not been for the sizable jump in pay to 1AE I would have been pretty content as a 2AE.
You’re never fully ready for the next position. It’s about stepping outside of that comfort zone and taking on those challenges. In my opinion, the 2AE position is the best spot in the engine department. You’re no longer the 3AE everyone sort of keeps their eye on and you don’t have the responsibility of the 1AE. Keep your equipment running well and fuel numbers accurate for the Chief, no one is the wiser. Once you start sailing 2AE you’ll be wondering why you didn’t move up sooner.
Now the jump from 2AE to 1AE is a different story.
I ask because I wanted to know if it worked like the Mobile infantry (you have the Job until you leave or I find someone better) or there was a point in their career when they felt prepared for it. Call it my own insecurity. I dont know if 3 years as a 3rd is enough preparation for 2AE job, or if I should get more experience and Certs before I apply, that’s all. Just looking for guidance from experience
If you’ve been a third for 3 years and aren’t ready now for a 2nd slot you haven’t been paying attention. ![]()
Its been the first boat that I wanted to move up on. Just got a little comfortable in my current position and sought a little advice.
2nd probably has the widest comfort zone on the whole ship as long as you know what you are doing.
I found out I was ready to jump up to 2nd when the Chief came to me and said “The 2nd just quit, you’re the 2nd now.”
Sailing Day 3rd and Engine 2nd with MSC and some yard periods definitely aided in being ready for 1st eventually, but nothing really prepares you for C/E.
My experience is that if you have the license and an opportunity to advance, do it. Stop thinking about it and do it. This would be an entirely different conversation if we were talking about 1AE.
Advance as soon as you can. The problems or knowledge required of a 3AE and 2AE are basically the same. It is just the systems involved. On an MSC ship there is usually plenty of help if you get into the weeds. If you are responsible, respectful and kind, you will be fine.
