What is the compelling national interest in having a U.S. Merchant Marine Academy?

During my sailing years I can recall no one gave a hoot where anyone was from it was how well they worked, and how well they got along with the crew, that was important.

Yes. Nice comment.

Double post

Yet another brilliantly worded and meaningful post by c.captain.

Looking at lostone’s comparing of the costs per student at KP and SUNY and I don’t think he is comparing the same thing at both schools. He says the budget at KP is $85 million and with 1000 students that is $85,000 per student per year.

He then says that tuition, room and board etc. at SUNY is $20,000 for instate and $31,000 out of state per year per student making KP about 3 times more expensive per student than SUNY.

However that charge of $20,000 and $31,000 per year covers only 27.14% of SUNY’s budget (2011-2012). So to compare it to the budget as he did for KP those figures must be multiplied by 3.68 to get an equal comparison to KP’s numbers.

That gives you costs of $114,080 per year for out of state and $73,600 per year for instate. If the student body is 50% each that gives an average of $93,840 cost per year per student. That is quite close to KP’s cost.

Hopefully all those numbers make sense.

thanks…I rather liked it myself

btw, when you double post like that, you CAN go back and delete one of them you know. Just a friendly fyi

It seems to me that the students at KP have been warned not to act arrogant when boarding as a cadet and not to immediately start going about “correcting” everyone else aboard ship. The recent cadets I’ve seen have held their tongue in my presence and resisted the urge to fix me. Maybe behind my back there have been plenty of eye rolls and head shakes but they haven’t yet called the USCG on me.

This is a great improvement from a generation ago.

You’re welcome and just be thankful that I gave you the yawn version as opposed to the “other” lion photo I like to use…

“Frankly my dear…”
