Wage increases

Boeing employees just got another 35% raise over 4 years.

That’s about right. Apparently, they have an effective union.

We licensed mariners need to be getting at least 10% a year just like everyone else.

Well I don’t know if you’ll find anyone here disagreeing with you. I’m all for it!

Honestly it’s coming. They have to do something. Once one company does it, most will follow.

Seems like hiring has slowed down. Sure, there are still jobs out there for experienced folks. Sounds like entry level mariners are having a hard time.
I’m not sure there is still that ‘desperation’ to crew boats up that we saw a while back. From what I can see, that’s what it would take…

I’m not getting as many calls as a few months ago, but that is typical for this time of year.

My company is still hiring.

We’re hiring a couple deckhands. An unanticipated uptick in fall business. Interesting thing: lots of applicants but nearly all from Gulf Coast/South. And of those most from a town whose abbreviated name sounds vaguely like ‘Sack’.

Where I work lost 2 captains in the last few weeks. Thats at least 5 since summertime.

They’ve also lost about 15 ABs, oilers, and licensed engineers all together in the same amount of time.

The supply of tugboat and workboat mariners is just about in balance with demand. There are enough, but no extra men sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring.

We’ve got a green deckhand onboard. They can’t find experienced tugboat deckhands.

The company has just enough Captains, but is short on Mates and Chief Engineers.

I have not actually looked for a job in six years. For awhile this past winter, spring and summer, I was getting a lot of calls. It has slowed down to a trickle, probably because I’ve already said no to so many people, and the Alaska season is winding down.

Fishing has dropped off. I’m hearing from some good experienced mariners that are ready for a change from fishing to tugs.
