Google translate is pretty good, especially if you have some knowledge of the language you are translating to (or from) and tweak it a bit. But it would probably choke on nautical terminology, so I’m guessing it wasn’t used.

You are right. I have a working knowledge of Spanish, and am more comfortable reading than speaking (unless I have had a beer or two to get over myself). Often I have to review logs and Daily Job Reports that are in Spanish. . . . between misspellings and working jargon (firing line on a laybarge is fun), Google can have its limitations. . . .
First you need to be US citizen to become an officer ,For my own experience the best way it’s to send your paper work to the NMC , it’s different for everyone who has a foreign license, I had 2nd Mate Unlimited license from Cuba and the only thing the CG recognized was my seatime to give me the AB Unlimited , I started all over again , STCW Assessments , and tests at the CG , and I got my 3er Mate Unlimited , and after one year you can apply for 2nd Mate who out testing just need seatime.
