USNS Seay

Hello

A couple of questions on the above referred ship.

  1. Are the accommodations and/or the head for the unlic. crew shared or single?
  2. Is the ship always tied up to the docks or does she sail?
  3. Anything that you might think that it’s useful for me to know about the ship?

Thanks

She is a Bob Hope class ship.

The reason for asking is that 1) This will be my 1st MSC ship and 2) The first time I will be going to Diego Garcia. Ergo, I am clueless on what gear to take with me or what to pack in my sea bag. Asking at the hall got me generic replies.

A reply from somebody experienced would be appreciated.

Cheers

I have never been on the Seay. I have been to Diego. It is warm weather there and the best view of it is as you leave. It has been quite some time since I was there and things may have changed. The saying is that Diego is great for AA. Alcoholics and Athletics. The ship I was on was shifted from the Med to Diego. Diego is the reason I left the job. You still need to experience Diego once in your career but don’t become a “gooner”. Gooners are sailors that spend their whole career in that frigging lagoon. I would take a Kindle and have it loaded up with a bunch of books. Other than that, take something that will occupy your time there. You can buy any necessities like toiletries on the island.

I was never on the Seay but one of her sister ships about 8 years ago when they were MMP. Only did a brief relief trip and we were 1 of 4 Bob Hope’s tied up in Violet. They seemed like decent ships at the time, nicer than much of what my career had been spent on. I do not recall much about the living quarters for unlicensed crew, maybe it was 2 guys to a cabin and they shared a head, I don’t recall. But I do not think there was a gang head if that is what you are concerned with. Whether or not she is tied to a dock, at anchor, or underway I have no idea. Anything else useful? Whatever your recruiter told you expect the complete opposite. Good luck.

Thanks, RespectMyAuthority & The Commodore. Much appreciate the insight. One last question, as I forgot to ask at the hall. Does MSC provide with coveralls or should I take my own work clothes?

Thanks once again.

I worked on the Bob Hope and Dahl in 2001 as an OS. It was single man rooms with shared head between the rooms.

I can live with that

I looked up that Diego place…holy cow is that awesome. I guess they do crew change by chartering a C130 or something and fly the whole CC in at once? I bet the wifi is pretty shitty over there too haha
