USNS Cesar Chavez

And the ship is renamed…..?

What? Care to elaborate?

Cesar Chavez is experiencing a downturn in popularity. Seems he was an abuser.

I didn’t know who he even was. lol

No big deal, abusers have been elected president.

He was a labor organizer but no one has accused him of being in the mafia or killing anyone yet. Paying off rape victims like Jennifer Flowes or forcing interns like Monica Lewinsky to have sex isn’t a crime & Cesar Chavez hasn’t been convicted of any crimes. Believe what you want to depending on your political persuasions. They were going to change the name of that ship regardless.

We need to stop listening to 50 and 60 year old salacious allegations against public figures who are long dead and cannot defend themselves or their legacy.

We need to view and understand 50 to 60 year old events in the context of their times. What was normal and generally acceptable in society 60 years ago, may not be acceptable today. Times change. But it’s improper to demonize past public figures by applying today’s standards to them.

That’s all before we even get into problems of proof. 50 to 60 year old recollections of events are unreliable. It many cases, they are little more than evolving fantasies that bear no relation to reality.

It’s ridiculous to be taking the names of the founding fathers of this country off public buildings because they owned slaves 200 years ago. At that time it was perfectly normal and legal to own slaves. These great men did a lot of good things, and nothing wrong within the context of their times.

We have no shortage of current problems and living breathing evildoers today. That is what we need to focus on.

I had the same reaction until I read the article that describes the multiple allegations and the multiple corroborations - not just recent statements, but recordings, contemporary documents, and DNA paternity tests among others.

NYT: Cesar Chavez, a Civil Rights Icon, Is Accused of Abusing Girls for Years

Enormous oof.

A dead man is ACCUSED (that’s the keyword) of misdeeds 60 years ago. The sort of misdeeds that were quite common at that time.

Why should we care about this now?

Doesn’t our current cast of characters give us enough to worry about.

I was around nearly 50 years ago & men weren’t rampantly running around knocking up 13 yr old girls. I could consider your above opinion if it was an isolated incident for him, maybe a secretary & women of or near age of consent. But it was girls as young as 12 & 13. Most of his victims & all of his offspring from his attacks are still alive. We’re not talking 200 years ago, he died in 1993? He was accused of these attacks & behavior while he was still alive. He choose to ignore them & there’s records of the union & his family sweeping it under the rug. So screw the argument, “He’s not here to defend himself”. There’s no statute of limitations on being called a serial rapist & pedophile that I know of.

From the New York Times & NBC articles linked on this thread:

“He locked the door, as he always did when he called her, and told her how lonely he had been. He brought her onto the yoga mat that he often used in his office for meditation, kissed her and pulled her pants down. “Don’t tell anyone,” he told her afterward. “They’d get jealous. The man, Cesar Chavez, one of the most revered figures in the Latino civil rights movement, was 45. She was 13.”

______

“The finding are based on interviews with more than 60 people, including his top aides at the time, his relatives and former members of the U.F.W., which he co-founded with Ms. Huerta and Gilbert Padilla. The Times reviewed hundreds of pages of union records, confidential emails and photographs, as well as hours of audio recordings from U.F.W. board meetings.”

____

“A handful of Mr. Chavez’s relatives and former U.F.W. leaders have been aware for years about various allegations of sexual misconduct, but there is no evidence that they made efforts to fully investigate the accusations, acknowledge the victims or apologize to them. Instead, many of the women say they were discouraged from speaking out in order to preserve Mr. Chavez’s public image. Internal emails dating back over a decade show union members discussing Ms. Murguia’s claims of abuse and the impact it had on her life. One of Ms. Murguia’s relatives confronted Mr. Chavez while he was still alive, in the 1980s. According to the relative, Mr. Chavez offered no defense and responded only by clearing his throat.”

Yeah let’s put those confederate statues back up I say

If my memory serves me correctly, Monica pursued Bill & admitted such in her recorded phone conversations with Tripp. Force was not applied.

In fact, in her book, she admitted it was consentual: She wanted it; craved it; got it. . . then claimed victimhood. . .

Jennifer Flowers WAS NOT RAPED by Clinton - they had a 12 year extra-marital affair. . .

C’mon Sandy, you’re better than this rant! [but the ship, that should not have been named, will be renamed - I do agree]

Where are the paid protestors demanding the ship be renamed?

Nowhere because they do not exist and never have.

  • I would sign right up and get some easy cash if this was actually a thing
