I’ve heard the waiting list for the SIU is miles long? Am I wrong about that? I also heard they’re really anal about your dental work. I need to get a crown on one of my teeth. I think I’d be denied entry based on that alone, according to some of the things I’ve been reading. I would definitely do it if it’s a feasible option. If you have any more info on this please share.

All of the Halls will tell you you don’t have a chance if you sit around, and suggest going to the school. As far as I know the wait is a few months to get in at most if you finish all your paperwork.
What’s the big deal about getting a crown? Do whatever it takes to get the dentist to approve you. Why do you think that root canals frequently turn into emergencies? It wouldn’t be good if they had to airlift you off a ship you were working on because you got an infection from a bad tooth, don’t you think?

I’m not mixing it up. Someone on this forum stated there was a wait list of 300 people. There are 600 reasons there are problems with crowns. $600, not chump change. I would get the crown only if I got an offer to attend the school first, if they allow that.
Man I’m with you. I wouldn’t get a crown either! I’d teach them for sure. Imagine someone telling me to take care of myself and making that some sort of stipulation. No, don’t get a crown whatever you do. And yea, if they do make you get one make sure they are going to allow training and then a job. For that matter why would a company require that a prospective employee take a physical. What business is it of theirs anyway! My health is my concern and mine alone!

If you own a house as you stated, you can afford $600. You mentioned paying for school, as in, BST. That’s $600 at least. If you get in to SIU’s school you’ll get the BST for free, so consider it a fair trade. There are incidental upfront costs to attend the school. You need to have some way of paying that. You’ll get it back later. Borrow it from someone. Heck, a credit union will lend you $1000 for a cause like this. I think they don’t require the dentist’s note until you’ve passed the first round of the application process anyway. Or get the tooth pulled if you don’t care about your teeth. That’s a lot cheaper than a crown. My dentist doesn’t require payment in full up front. Maybe you need to find a new dentist. You think it’s no big deal, but an infected tooth can kill you.

I don’t think you realize that a critically sick mariner is a liability. That’s why the school wants to make sure there are no “avoidable emergencies” when you are on a ship. A person who is in danger of an infected tooth (cavities gone out of hand, open tooth that needs a crown, etc) can get that infection without warning - it can spread into the jaw and bloodstream. An abscessed tooth can become critical overnight, putting you in real danger if you don’t get treated. Antibiotics aren’t going to help you in this scenario. If you aren’t in danger of this happening, the dentist will write a note saying you have no cavities or major issues.

I’m well aware of their rules and why they have them, if I wasn’t, I would not have alluded to the fact that I might be disqualified based on dental issues.
