Tuna Fishing off Sitka Alaska

Brief tuna bounty in Southeast Alaska spurs excitement about new fishing opportunity

Tydingco said there is no precise count for the tuna haul. Based on anecdotal reports, social media posts and general talk around town, he estimates that there were 200 caught out of Sitka.

“People have caught tuna occasionally out of southern Alaska for many years, but it’s still uncommon and mostly incidental,” said Fish and Game Sitka-area biologist Troy Tydingco to Wired2fish . “Sport anglers have successfully targeted tuna out of Prince of Wales Island from time to time, but this is the first time I’m aware that sport anglers have successfully targeted tuna from Sitka.”

That’s pretty wild, Tuna offshore of Washington is kinda a big deal when it’s happening.

Not good for commercial fishing however. The commercial fisheries of Alaska depend on a cold ecosystem.

I don’t know why this discussion isn’t more in the national news.

Ocean warming has already devastated one commercial fishery. They are all interrelated.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the coastal seiner Hillersøy from Bulandet delivered the first major landing of Bluefin Tuna in Norway this year. It took place at Domstein Fish AS’s facility at Raudeberg near Måløy. Around 70 bluefins were hauled ashore, and the largest of them weighed a whopping 373 kilograms.

Here you can see how the crew on the boat guts and cleans the large fish before it is delivered to the receiving facility.
