To shellac or not?

Whipping a hand rail and when finished was wondering if I should shellac it. Any old Bosuns out there?

I’ve done it both ways. If you don’t shellac it will quickly turn black with all of the grease and bacteria from your shipmates hands. If you do shellac make sure you do nice, even coats. Also, you should finish off those terminations with Turks heads, it’ll look much more finished. I’m sure you probably know this, if you do a half hitch with every turn it will give the whipping a nice spiral.

Edit upon inspection of your photos:
I see holidays in that whipping son. Cut it off and start over.

. I have fixed said holidays and appreciate your advice thanks for the input .

Bloodyshitcakes (love that name) has good advice here. I have used polyurethane, two or three coats as a finish.
