Thoughts on your company GOM

I agree with Fraqrat, Hornbeck is the place to be…

Yayyyy!!! Orange and black orange and black!!!

I think the whole issue with fishing at Tidewater was ’ waaaahhhh I got a hook in my hand!’. Then that becomes an incident report.

As far as the knives are concerned, it’s the oil companies. We worked for one company that allowed knives if the blade was 3" or less. Worked for another that a no knife policy. I carried one everyday anyway and decided that I was going to see how far I with that master’s overriding authority.

Damn man there’s no place for rebels in the oilfield. It’s TURDWATER not Tidewater!

I stand corrected “TURDwater”.

90% of the silly rules each company has come from the “Fire…ready…aim” school of thought. The other 10% from lawyers who’ve only seen the water from the deck of a yacht.

What do we do when the bitchin stops ?

You spontaneously explode, and are never heard from again

It is all about the insurance companys. Some idiot gets hurt while fishing and then turns around and sues. I worked for a company that did not allow fishing, working out, shorts, or porn. They took all the fun out of being out here.

No porn!?!? I have a hard time believing they were able to enforce that one!!

That’s the only thing we have to look forward to. If they paid us to be away from home we would get paid a hella of a lot more. Think about the 8 months you go to prison on your floating asylum. Just saying. I vote for even time like the rigs and a little bit more freedom. I would sign a non liability agreement in a heartbeat if I could fish. I have insurance of my own. FML!!!

Life is a hazardous adventure and then you die.

There are risks to everything. From time to time someone is going to get hurt doing normal life activities like driving, fishing, working out, or whatever. When employees are expected to spend half their life at work in isolation, they need as many normal living activities as possible. To the extent that there might be some small cost to the employer as a result is just part of doing business.

All of these silly restrictions on normal life activities really diminishes the quality of life onboard. These employers are much less attractive places to work as a result. Also, it shows employees just how little the employer actually cares about them.

Whatever the employers are saving with all this mean spirited overbearing nannyizm — it is off set many times over by the cost of increased wages, higher turnover, and the bad attitudes that it creates.

So the company that won’t let you work out are they going to pay you’re wages when you can’t pass a CG physical because you weigh to much from lack of exercise?

Funk that! And I thought Northeast ATB life sucked…man, you guys got it pretty shitty down there in some aspects. I just cannot swallow the fact that you can’t carry a knife. That’s ridiculous. And the whole idea of working 2 and 1…no way Jose. I will sacrifice slightly lower pay to have and keep my sanity that hangs by a string anyway. I couldn’t stay away from my smokin hot wife that long in the first place.

Tugsailor, you have some of the best posts on here. Same with Fraqat. Great stuff. Keep it coming.

Where is it etched in stone you have to work 2 for 1. I work even time and there are plenty at my company that do as well. I have friends at several other company’s they work even time also. I haven’t heard of any company that won’t let you work out. I’m not saying they aren’t out there. No fishing who gives a shit. Can’t walk to the store for a paper get a land job where you can have it delivered. The ridiculous amount of money all of us get paid makes it easier to handle all of these minor inconveniences. I say minor because a major inconvenience would be my wife and kid starving with no roof over their heads. If there isn’t enough channels on your boats Direct TV package or no satellite TV at all change companies. If not being able to fish pisses you off go work on a charter boat. When someone says fuck my life because of this nonsense it blows my mind. Right now there are whole families living in their fucking cars who would gladly trade places with you. Blowing off steam is one thing but some of these complaints are ridiculous in the grand scheme of things. You have a job and it pays more than most people with double masters degrees. I know pay varies with each segment of the industry but if you are that miserable change companies. Just remember its nice to be able to bitch about not being able to carry a knife on the 1st and 15th. I never thought I would be making this kind of money in my lifetime. I feel truly blessed especially in this financial climate. I realize this is all fuck you money “yeah here ya go fuck you take your money I can’t crew my boat with out you”. When the inevitable bust happens, as it always does I can’t wait to see who is bitching about fishing then. Some one else said its good times in the oilfield lets enjoy it. No truer words were said. Take some of that “hard earned” cash and by a fishing video game or get a kindle so you got plenty to read. This thread was about what you think of your company. So far I see well paid people griping about nonsense. I haven’t seen anyone say I work at X Company and here’s why I stay working here. So far it’s all a bunch of complaints without anyone throwing a company name out there. Are you afraid you will lose the job you hate so much? FML!!!

I’m with Penn and for me its about the best sailing job there is.

Maybe I could make more money somewhere else, but I pull down almost 100K for working 6 months a year … not too shabby. I pay $0 for health insurance, the company pays travel airport to airport, we fish all the time, carry knives, we all have DirectTV in our cabins, we buy TVs out of grub money, we split up the kitty at the end of the year, we don’t have uniforms and very little regulations compared to other companies. A common statement on my boat is “I’ll take less money for less BS any day”.

There ya go! You’re happy and that’s all that matters.

At a middling-size company on a 14’5 crewboat with a large independent E&P company as customer, we have: an adequate food budget $375/wk for four giuys), pocket knives, a no-fishing policy, satellite radio we pay for, TVs and DVD players provided but no satellite yet, okay but not great health insurance that kicks in at 30 days … we set our own schedules and work out coverage when one of us has to take extra time off, ee drive ourselves to crew change and we see someone from the office only once or twice a month. Ideal? No. But I work with a pretty good crew on a pretty good boat and get paid pretty good money for it. Someday, not too far down the road, I’ll upgrade my license, take what I’ve learned, and go to work for a different company that offers satellite and internet and even time along with a day rate that makes that feasible. Ir maube by then my current employer will offer those opportunities. Right now I am thankful to have a steady job I like that pays well enough to support my family.
