Amenities on board

Is it to much for mariners to ask for amenities while on board i.e exercise equipment, internet, satellite etc

We are making the company money should they return the favor other than a weekly wage. Because even during off time, the ship cant move without a full crew

I’m sure it’s yours for the asking… Let us know how it works out.

Exercise equipment is mandatory on Norwegian vessels and internet is standard and we got 5000 dollars to use on welfare onboard a year.

You know the small stuff.

Just about every ship I have been on had some sort of exercise equipment. Some better than others. The current company I sail with now has sat tv. Internet has been discussed but it’s just rumor right now. Most others I sailed overseas had a pretty extensive movie library.

On the drill ships we have internet, most have wireless on each level, a bull pen down stairs with company supplied computers for those to cheap to buy a laptop. a phone both to make calls back home for free with a 10 minute a day time limit. We have a cardio room, a separate weight room, and fancy things like bowflex’s plus a bunch of other workout equipment. The helipad is free to go up and walk laps after helo ops are complete for the day. We have satellite TV but only 4 or 5 channels. It has been 15 years since I been on a tug, creature comforts sucked back then and doesn’t seem like they have got much better since I left.

Thanks. I like to work hard but also relax in comfort with amenities to boot

We have Directv, wifi on each level and new boats have bowflex and treadmill.

MSC…internet, Direct TV, gyms, library, Sat Phone (each ship has its own policy on using the sat phone), karaoke machine.

Does a bunch of sober sailors singing karaoke actually qualify as entertainment? That would be more like torture to me.

Regular tug; Internet (no video etc), sat tv, elliptical machine. Comfortable Single
Rooms with their own thermostats. We would have more but limited space. Company gives us what we ask for within reason if we can justify it and its reasonable.

No one has mentioned the cotton candy machine… that’s what I have been hoping for.

The least of my worries is amenities. All I am looking for is a job after I get some added credentials.

For a “workout area”, I can do pushups and situps in my quarters. and jumping jacks on deck.
Internet hookup,I can read old magazines and books or do this thing called “learn about the vessel”.
Sat phone, I can talk to people I want to talk to enough . All this talk about amenities makes me chuckle.

Again, after I get offered a job the last GD thing I care about is amenities.

What’s wrong with wanting to improve the quality of your life aboard? You will spend the majority of your life on a vessel. Do you only read magazines at home? How are you going to do push ups and sit ups in your quarters when your opposite is sleeping? Let me know how that goes. Jumping jacks on the back deck? Better have your steel toes and hard hat on. Nothing wrong with asking for exercise equipment, they want you to be in excellent health when they hire you…

Lol push ups and exercises in your quarters… Good luck.

Just because you choose to eat the shit sandwich don’t mean we all need to. I’m willing to bet a whole internet system is cheaper than the old sat email system, I don’t know of any boat that doesn’t have an e mail system so the boat and the office can communicate. So why not let the crew share it. But I don’t care about that as much as I care about some type of work out equipment. My quality of life shouldn’t drop to 3rd world status just because I’m on a boat. Most of these boats get good day rates, gym equipment is a very small percentage of the day rate and you only buy it once.

You ever been on a boat

I’m guessing that internet can be problematic. 1. It could be a distraction where you would find guys “sneaking off” to check email…facebook… porn… whatever. 2. Then there is the problem of making sure that your firewall is good enough to block access to the wrong sites… 3. also the problem that could occur when someone ends up infecting the network with a virus compromising not only the recreational internet use… but the business use that they need the network for. These are not insurmountable obstacles… there ARE firewalls and limits you can enforce on your network. But, when more people have their technological fingers in the network… the chances of things going wrong go up. 4. There are also bandwidth issues where some people could hog up the network traffic and make it hard for even official business to get done.

They could have parallel systems that would limit some of those problems… but again, that’s an extra cost… and doesn’t deal with the distraction issue that they may be trying to avoid. But, overall, it shouldn’t be so hard to get people access to internet these days. It would mean a lot to people in both entertainment and the ability to be in contact with friends and family.

Things have changed over the years. Most modern vessels have crew internet [haven’t see one without it recently], theater, cardio room, weight room with free weights, a few have electronic golf or shooting rooms, all cabins have internet and TV. Toured an LNG with a pool for the crew. But the most significant thing for me is no more bunk beds, never thought I’d see that.

Where do I get this? I want this!
