This I disagree with. Look at all the Irish, Italian, German, etc. customs that are part of our social fabric today that would’ve been considered foreign by American Nationalists in the 1800s. No one bats an eye at Catholicism nowadays, but even in the ‘60s it was worried that it’d be controversial that Kennedy was a Catholic.
…now we’re really going off topic. Just like most of the contributions by non-US mariners in this thread.

I let myself get sucked into Kraken’s drunken tirade to an expat for respecting his new country because I am an expat myself and respect my adoptive country.
As long as we’re off topic I’ll respond to your comparing the immigrants you mention with many in the current crop. They didn’t show gratitude to their adoptive country by demanding that it adopt legal systems and customs incompatible with the US Constitution. They didn’t presume to dictate to the US government that it should change its policies to suit their wants and desires after introducing themselves by thumbing their noses at and breaking US laws . I’ll leave it there.
