Test and Time Limit

Here’s a quick question. Suppose a license applicant was approved to test and waited until the last month of his “approval to test” letter to take the test. Now, suppose he failed one of the modules and shortly later his year to test ran out. We know he would have to resubmit his application but would he have to retake everything or just the module he failed?

The approval to test lasts for a year. This can be extended by request. Once you start testing, a different 90 day window starts (the one year means nothing at this point). This can be extended by request as well, if work related (stuck offshore during testing and the 90 day elapses). The only way you have to retake a passed module, is if you failed one module 3 times, or 3 different modules in the first round (for unlimited licenses), and had to start the entire regime over. I don’t even think you have to resubmit an application even if you failed everything. I think you just wait 90 days, and they give you second chance after the grace period. Pretty sure this is accurate.

To answer your question: “We know he would have to resubmit his application but would he have to retake everything or just the module he failed?” If you open another application, you start over, regardless of what you passed or failed.

Thanks, good news and very encouraging. He has had scheduling and communication problems but now seems ready to go for it. With the 90 day window he should be just fine.

You have on year to complete the entire testing process, i.e., one year to pass the test. If you wait until the end of the period, you won’t be allowed re-takes after the one year has expired.

That’s not good, but I do know some who started late and got the whole 90 days, making it a little over the year since being approved. Maybe another inconsistency?!!?

I am going to advise this guy to resubmit his application for raise in grade just cover all the possibilities. With a very full work schedule out of the USA and a family illness issue he just didn’t have time to study, schedule and take the test. It seems a shame there are no extensions. Meanwhile I am going to call NMC and see what they say. I might call a few times and see which answer suits best.
