UK has worked out that they will have an international punch up no matter what they do. If they give it away, they upset theUSA. If they keep it, they upset Mauritius and the internationalists pushing for decolonisation.
A sensible UK should prefer their fight not to be with Mr. calm reasonable and logical.

Well strictly speaking there are no “oppressed people of colour” to speak of presently living on the Chagos Islands. That is because those that where living there were forcibly removed by the British between1967 and 1973.
Since the Ilois, or Chagossians—inhabitants of the Chagos Archipelago are descended from African slaves and Indian plantation workers taken there by the French in the late 1700s. or by the British in the early 1800s.
I presume having been on the islands for 250 years doesn’t qualify them as “natives”, nor have the right to claim the islands as their rightful “home”.
