I think there’s a lot more to the suggestion that the USA ‘defends’ us as opposed to being obligated to come to our aid if we are attacked, as we are obligated to defend the USA if it is attacked. We were last attacked in WWII - thanks for helping out.
You are a far more likely to be attacked eg by attacks on US ships/aircraft in the Taiwan area etc than we are so we are more likely to be drawn into a fight by our obligations to you. So behave. Please.

Trump has blocked the Brits transfer of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. It’s not going to happen.
Simple problem to solve. Buy the Islands from the Brits for a modest payment. Give all the Chagoseans (not a great number of them) US citizenship and a few dollars for an irrevocable waiver of any claim to the islands. Tell Mauritius the truth, that they have no rights or claim to the islands, not now, not ever.
It’s been reported in the press that the transfer is on hold until Trump can weigh in on it. Google is your friend. I may have seen that item in The Guardian.

This is what AP says. Personally I don’t think Trump could find the place on a map but evidently someone with the government thinks it needs a look.
Notice that this was January 15 so someone in the Biden administration suggested waiting until Trump could have some input. Trump didn’t block it neither did Biden. Someone in power while Biden was president simply suggested waiting to see what the new president of the US had to say. The UK was free to do whatever they wanted or wait. They chose to wait.
