No — they had MEBA guys onboard. Whether or not they have an MOU with the school I could not tell you, but I assume they do.
Tote has two jobs on the board for the Empire State. They managed the build so I wonder if they now have the contract to crew it.

That’s too bad but that’s what happens when ships don’t have spares. Maybe quicker to get spares in FL than to ship to the Azores, sure they weren’t going direct but more than likely through Portugal just adding to the logistical challenge.
Don’t envy the old man’s position taking first in class of out with all that precious cargo who have direct links to mommy and daddy and Starlink to help get uninformed information out to the world.
Someone else was saying they were surprised they sailed short (or absent) any spares to begin with. But — as you have pointed out, first in class means lots to learn.
And yes, it’s hard to run a ship when your precious cargo, the young future leaders of industry, run to report every little thing that shocks or upsets them and contradicts their feelz to mom, dad, instagram, Facebook, the administration etc…

Aren’t ships officers and instructors separate groups?
It was my understanding that that could only be used once so they usually save that to use to upgrade from Chief Mate to Master. That’s how most of the “captains” teaching at the academies got their Master Unlimited.
From what I’ve seen there’s usual a lot of overlap and swapping around of positions, at least year-to-year, among the long term f/t faculty. I’m sure they have the system figured out amongst themselves to make sure they all get as much time towards upgrade possible. It helps that they know the licensing system inside and out since that’s what they deal with all year.
