already in wikipedia 2025 North Sea ship collision - Wikipedia

T’bone collision reminds me of an event of the accident in not so distant past .

Fm Dr.Sal video : i see nothing unussual of going in autopilot mode as this is what ships normally do ( some even in pilotage waters with pilots o/b) some even go into track mode . As long as lookout/helmsman is available on stand by i see no problem here.

I would throw in the latest buzzword SYSTEM FAILURE used by the growing bunch of apologists and do-goodders what may be is a substitution of the act of GOD heading into oblivion.

Lots of talk about the cargo of the Stena Immaculate (jet fuel) and what that may do to the environment, but little about what was on the Solong.
It is not likely to be ALL Scotch Whiskey.

There are also the possibility that one, or both ships sink, with whatever bunker fuel is onboard.

UPDATE: It is now reported that the Solong carried 15 containers holding some sort of dangerous substance (Sodium -----)

Sky is running live updates.

This wouldn’t be the first time someone set the autopilot to go EXACTLY where they wanted to go and then fell asleep and hit whatever they aimed at, but usually this is solo sailors going 6 knots, not a ship with presumably more than one person aboard. Maybe some really good porn going in the mess had everyone’s attention?

It isn’t unheard of to come across a ship at sea that appears to have no live human awake, but wouldn’t this ship be in pilotage waters? Was there a pilot aboard also doing nothing???

No.

Reminds me of a captain I sailed with that honestly believed that other ships could see the track line we had in ECDIS and was enraged that they would just keep getting in the way… “they can see that we’re about to turn, why the hell are they not going around us the other way?!”

This reminds me of my brief time in the GOM when after a rain the senior captain [there were a few captains onboard] had the deckhands wash down everything. When I asked him why he said, "Everyone knows the rain in the Gulf is full of saltwater.’

1990 got one German master on minibulker who was watching porns and ironing his shirts on the bridge in English Channel. Was known in the fleet, very nice person, likable and of course very lucky.

Doing both those things at once would seem to present multiple dangers on both the ironing and porn watching fronts. Hopefully he at least got someone else to steer!

Our thoughts at the Maritime Safety Innovation Lab are with the seafarers and responders to this incident. We recently had a safety observation submitted that addressed a similar situation and a number of recommended actions were generated (see below). Although it will be some time before an accident report is available from NTSB or MAIB, this collision will likely be a case study for similar situations.
