You say none of those posts dealt specifically with STCW course on the West Coast in 2013. You need to realize that you’re not going to get answers that are always up to date. Might have been a better plan to take the answers that were given and make some calls. You definitely aren’t searching hard enough cause most of these answers can be found in a few minutes with a google search.
Well, someone has to teach them for sure. My point is it’s not up to only me, or other ships officers to teach. Show by example, instruct the right methods, etc… But they need to gain some sort of formal training and take it upon themselves to hone the skills. I never held anyone back from learning, but then I never held school onboard either. The unlic have to take the lead. Plenty of AB’s studied in their rooms at night for third mate, plenty of OS did the same for AB.
The SU’s earn sea time when onboard of course.
I am waiting on my z card and then looking for a OS job. If I have attended a Maritime Academy for 3 semesters, done the 60 day training cruise, the basic firefighting course, first aid/cpr, and courses like that is that the same as the STCW BST?

I agree, it’s a lot like this forum, questions like," I want to be a merchant marine can some one tell me what to do" are not met with a warm reception. But if someone says I’ve been working on this problem for a few days now but I am stuck then people are much more inclined to help.
It’s the difference between someone needing to have their hand held on a trip compared to getting a little help reading a map.

It might be if the courses you took were approved, check it on the USCG NMC website, compare the language on your course completion certificates with what is listed for the approved courses. Plus, there is more to BST than what you listed.
