Speeding Ticket.......License Renewal 3rd Mate.....looking for advice

Hello All:

I just recently renewed my 3rd Mate license and everything is all set. I just took the VSO course in order to get the endorsement on my MMC. At the time, when I submitted my renewal package to the US Coast Guard, I was “good to go” as far as my driving record was concerned. Subsequently, I got a speeding ticket on I-95. It wasn’t reckless driving or anything. Speed limit was 65 mph and I was traveling a little too fast. I paid the fine right away.

Now, I need to fill out a new application ( CG-719B ) in order to get the VSO endorsement on my MMC. I’m just wondering if I actually need to report the traffic violation on my application even though it wasn’t related to a DUI, reckless driving, etc… I checked the NMC website recently and apparently, the USCG has recently noticed an uptick in applicants not reporting convictions, etc. The link is a PDF entitled, “Failure to Disclose Convictions”. I read this document on their website and it says, “when in doubt, list it.” I read through the CFRs carefully last night (Title 46 CFR 10.213 - National Driver Register) and I’m under the impression that it’s something that does not need to be reported, but maybe I’m wrong.

It’s the first time I ever got a ticket from the police. Obviously, I’m not condoning speeding. On this particular day, I was in a rush to get to work. Like, who hasn’t been almost late for work, right?

Should I e-mail the NMC and ask them about this?

Also, on the CG-719B application, it says, “please attach statement”. What is the statement that the Coast Guard needs? I no longer have the citation from the police. Do I need to contact my local DMV (Dept. of Motor Vehicles) and request a driving record?

Just not sure what I need to do.

Doesn’t the application say ’ other than minor traffic violations’? when you list any convictions?

[QUOTE=Ctony;148195]Doesn’t the application say ’ other than minor traffic violations’? when you list any convictions?[/QUOTE]

that is correct.

Thanks guys for your replies. I think you’re both correct. Maybe, with time, Mr. Cavo will reply to the thread. Would be great to hear from a Coastie.

Speeding counts as a “Minor Traffic Violation” unless you were really excessively speeding, but if you were then you should try to get it reduced in court.

If it was some other misdemeanour like some type of domestic disturbance or trespassing or misdemeanour larceny, then you’d probably have to report it.

I got a speeding ticket and I’m concerned about my license? Are you shitting me? Gimme a beer.

Hell, my DUI never appeared on my driving record. Knowing the city judge helped a tad. . . . oh, but that was 31 years ago. . . .

That was before the National Driver Registry where the convictions are now recorded.

Think about the possible repercussions for being wrong in either case, i.e. is it better to say “yes” and find out it wasn’t required, or to have said “no” and to find out it was required.

I didn’t realize gCaptain readers were such law-abiding drivers. Apparently there is no one here who has had a speeding ticket that can relate first hand experience…

Here’s the answer in internet invisible ink: You don’t have to report “simple” speeding tickets.

It’s hard to get a speeding ticket on the boat. Driving on the highway is rare an should be avoided, on a boat.

Next time I will be sure to use [SARCASM] AND [/SARCASM] tags.

Well, it never even showed up for my auto insurance renewals. . . no SR 22, anything, let alone subsequent license renewals. Although I stopped inactive renewals some time ago.

Now you have me scared. The other evening I drove home and pulled the car into the garage. I wasn’t able to sleep well that night and jumped out of bed at 2 in the morning. It hit me like a brick, when I pulled in the garage one of the headlights might have been out. I went out to check it sure enough, I’d been driving a good distance with it out. I was never stopped or questioned by the police about it. But now I’m afraid if I don’t report it they may know that it was out and give me problems on my next renewal. How do I know that they don’t already know about it and are just waiting to see if I’ll come clean? Also, now I’m starting to worry about my tire air pressure. I may have been driving with low tire pressure going against the federal tire/air pressure guidelines for improved gas mileage.

Thank you (jdcavo) sir, for your reply. I appreciate it.

[SARCASM]You should be fine, as long as you didn’t tear the tag off your pillow that says “Do not remove…” [/SARCASM]

What if I cut it off instead of tear?

Cutting it would imply premeditation. Just tearing it is more of a “crime of passion” thing.

Don’t look like I’m gonna be able to renew.

Does anyone know if you can reapply after having it revoked if you can prove that you had perfect maintenance for a few years? We have to help this guy out. Maybe a maritime lawyer could chime in on this. I know we’ve all been there. One day we have a headlight out, the next day day we’re involved in human trafficking, then the USCG GETS YOU.

Man, I am glad that I retired. Not only did I CUT the tag off of the mattress, I torn them all off of my Dining Room Chairs.

Oh No, I have to RUN the Tag Task Force is coming down my Street.

PLEASE SEND BAIL MONEY!!!

Just summing up what everyone has said through sarcasm; FFS you can’t possibly be that stupid can you?!?
