Ship of the year 2024

The jury in Ship of The Year has selected the three vessels that are fighting to be named Ship of The Year during the SMM in Hamburg in September.

  • Here are the nominees in random order:

“Tyra”:

Under construction at Brødrene Aa in Hyen, which also has a design. The shipping company is Norled. “Tyra” will be equipped with the new battery replacement robot SHIFTR that Norled is developing together with Seam and Aarbakke.
The robot and technology will make it possible to electrify high-speed boats while maintaining the current timetable and speed. This could be a “game-changer” in the electrification of the fast boat market in Norway.
The vessel will sail the long route between Trondheim and Kristiansund.

“Olympic Boreas”:

Under construction at Ulstein shipyard in Ulsteinvik. Designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions. The shipping company is Olympic.
The ship is based on the new TWIN X-STERN solution – the sea’s answer to ‘four-wheel drive’, according to the shipping company.
Olympic Boreas is build number 318 and the first of two sister ships for Olympic. As CSOV ships, the ships will provide support for construction projects and carry out service missions within offshore energy.
“Olympic Boreas” is set to become the first completed ship with the new TWIN X-STERN solution.

MS «Reach Remote 1»:

These are the first newbuildings Trosvik Maritime has delivered since its start-up in 2022.
The vessel is a USV (unmanned service vessel):

  • Shipyard: Trosvik Maritime, * Design: Kongsberg Maritime
  • Shipping company: Reach Subsea
  • Length: 23.9 metres, * Width: 8 metres
The vessel has a service speed of 9 knots and has an operating length of at least 30 days. The vessel will replace some of the current service vessels that are 80 meters long. Although the new unmanned vessels will have diesel-electric main engines, the consumption of fuel will be reduced by 90 per cent compared to the use of traditional manned service vessels.

The new vessels have been developed by Reach Subsea in close collaboration with Kongsberg Maritime, which in addition to being responsible for the design, also supplies equipment for navigation, communication and propeller systems.

A third important partner in the project is Massterly, which is a joint venture between Kongsberg Maritime and the shipping and logistics company Wilhelmsen.

PS> At bottom of the article readers are invited to vote for their favourite vessel, but I don’t think it will work outside Norway. (You may try though)

Update: I voted.

:wink:From a forum perspective, it should definitely be the M/V Dali, providing this forum with two dozen topics, two thousand posts and more than 50 k views, while instigating weeks of accumulating hypotheses, ranging from the knowledgeable to the bizarre, most of them very entertaining.

(Sombre disclaimer: The sad fact that there has been innocent loss of life in this incident shall not be made light of by this tongue in cheek comment)

Maybe gcaptain could start a “Ship of the Year” contest along the lines of Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year”.
I.e based on; “the editors’ assessment of the individual who most shaped the headlines over the previous 12 months, for better or for worse”

Maybe the forum members could be allowed to vote on their favourite ship, much like for Skipsrevyen’s “Ship of the Year” (non-binding on the editor)?

A good caveat on internet polls - Remember the “Boaty McBoatface” contest aka RRS Sir David Attenborough
