In the spirit of normal deviation from the OP, there are several misconceptions and misnomers to clear up on diesel engines.

1. Roots blowers ARE superchargers.
2. 2 cycle diesels are not naturally aspirated. The 149’s, 71’s, ect are NORMALLY aspirated with a roots blower. They can have additional turbochargers.
3. The compressor on the EMD turbo is mechanically driven until around 700RPM when the exhaust gas takes over and drive clutch is released.

I’m not about to say any of you are wrong, as I have minimal engineering background, but I always thought a two stroke had blowers, turbo chargers, then superchargers. The difference between blowers and superchargers being compression; blowers just blow air into the scavenge air box whereas superchargers compress the air into the engine somehow (similar to turbochargers but engine driven). Please elaborate on how this is incorrect so I can learn…
