S/S MARINE ELECTRIC: 30 Years on the bottom

It was 30 years ago yesterday the MARINE ELECTRIC went to the bottom off Chincoteague,VA.
I had meant to post this yesterday and much to my chagrin, it slipped my mind during a very busy day.
31 of her 34 man crew were lost including Capt. Phil Corl.
Rest in Peace shipmates.

wow…has it been 30 years already?

1983 was a bad year as there was also the SS POET and GOLDEN DOLPHIN lost that year as well.

Fuck I am getting way too old!

Robert Frumps book anout the sinking and its aftermath is pretty good. “Until the sea shall free them”.

The same guy from the first “Good Quitting Stories” missed a job on the Marine Electric by one guy ahead of him at the MEBA union hall. Good thing he missed it as he would have died on the ship with the rest of those poor souls.

Great book, a must read for deep-sea mariners. The lawyers came after the crew.

The sinking of the Maine Electric was the incident which prompted congress to approve funding for the U.S. Coast Guard’s rescue swimmer program.

It also showed the failure of both Class and Coast Guard marine inspection. The details of the goings on prior to the sinking are just absolutely horrendous.

Yeah, the POET. Google can be very interesting in accessing the CG reports on these and other incidents.
