Imagine if these guys had knocked over a well head and the oil company’s got blamed.
Well I misspelled the title of the post can’t wait to hear about that!

No problem…just send a PM to Rob or Mike and they’ll fix it for you.
I don’t know why they don’t let us fix mistakes in the titles to threads…HEY YOU GUYS…WILL YOU FIX THIS FOR US?
Except for this unknown Washington Free Beacon, nobody else is doing anything with it. I’m sorry but this story doesn’t seem to have any legs to it.
It is does prove to be legit, then it is a story but do you see the Navy patrolling the limits of the OCS? Besides, I think anyone here should realize that the Russkies are the threat to the offshore industry in the Gulf but any effing Al Quayda terrorist can load up a sportfisher with C4 and drive right under the THUNDERHORSE without anybody saying BOO! These boats are a nuisance we all live with but they really are a threat that we should shoot at or better yet have a standby vessel like the LOOP SECURITY to chase the little emmeffers away and shot them if they don’t go! I have always felt that we should have standby vessels for each platform for security and lifesaving. Look at how many people the DAMON BANKSTON saved by being right alongside the DW HORIZON that night.
Yeah I was wondering if it wasn’t the russkies blowing smoke myself. Although they have been probing with the bombers I saw that on several news channels and sites. Just the thought of it makes you think. I hear ya on the sport fishers. The drillship we work gets nervous if they are too close. Their are four supply boats and a crew boat working this ship. One of us is always on location. That’s in addition to a 150 ft mini supply chase boat. They rarely leave the field except for a quickie crewchange or fuel.
Thanks Mikey!!!
You run off the recreational anglers and watch how fast the industry takes a down turn. Public support has allowed the oil industry to boom in Louisiana.
So what you’re saying is that the government should lease mineral rights of PUBLIC lands and then deny entry to the public sector? This has got to be one of your all time dumbest statements…

I’m not picking a fight over this but just pointing out that platforms are vulnerable to any little boat filled with enough explosives. Certainly not a likely terror scenario but not an impossible one either. Aren’t we all supposed to be anticipating the next way terrorists will strike because they will and take steps not to deny them the opportunity? How would you prevent a terrorist from blowing up the THUNDERHORSE by driving right underneath it? How about a boat putting terrorists aboard by driving right up to the sea escapes? Plain and simple but fixed platforms are vulnerable.
Also, if the LOOP has such security why not the THUNDERHORSE as well? What makes the LOOP special?
While you’re dreaming up new scenarios and gleefully sharing the details of all those possible scenarios you’re saving someone a shit load of work. STFU already. It only takes one psycho in a small boat (the USS Cole) to wreak havoc on a seemingly secure vessel. If they’re ok with dying they’ll be successful 99% of the time. At the very least, stop doing their thinking for them…ffs.
Even loop security couldn’t stop them. It’s just a crew boat. A high end fishing center console runs over 60mph with triple or quad outboards.
Stopping recreational fisherman in no way improves the security of a rig or platform. In fact it takes away from security by removing the eyes of locals who would be first defense by noticing a boat at the launch that didn’t fit in or any of the many scenarios where public observation is a big deterrent.
I think the loop is different b/c of the mooring operations, hose transfers, and so forth taking place with the tankers. Not to mention the subsea moorings, ect.
I was also thinking of the environmental catastrophe aspect. What if Russkies, Chicoms or Venezuelans wanted to wreak havoc on our economy and the oil market. Snapping off a well head or sub sea structure would achieve that. The hippies would be up in arms because of the spill. The government would shut us down again regardless of who is in the white house. The whole world would be affected.

Shit…you don’t need a sub for that! Just get a tug with some serious hp and attach a big assed grapple/cutter to its tow wire and drag that sucker all over the Gulf. You’d be tearing up pipelines all over the effing place spewing millions of gallons of crude and worse, shutting down ALL production! How long would it take before the Coast Guard figured out what was happening and got aircraft in the air and then they’d have to identify the boat doing the damage. I’d target the
big export pipelines from the deepwater production. Fixing those pipes after they’ve been ruptured would cost billions of $$$ and years to fix!
That is one of the goals of Alquida is to cause econimc or finical chaos. They could care less about actually killing a couple oilfield workers, the repercussion something like that would have to the entire economy would be where they get there rocks off. Not even mentioning the lives lost, think what 911 has cost this country every day since then just in the added sucerity and BS we have to endure now. National security aint cheap.
You mean al-CIA-da!
Embarrassing to the US Navy? Yes but not nearly as embarrassing as the stunt a Chinese sub pulled on the Navy a few years back:

Really? Why don’t you write the plan for it and publish that too…I’m sure someone with less than a thorough knowledge of our industry would find your input worth considering. Let us know how that works out for you when you get to Gitmo. Oh wait, sorry. No interweb on Gitmo…have a nice stay.
So in your world, somebody making a fairly generic/obvious observation about our general vulnerability equals a one way ticket to GITMO with no on-ta-net (sorry interweb), puh-leeze.
The opportunities to inflict catastrophic damage and loss of life is almost infinite but the scenario described could give the Hadjies a good ticket to the 40 virgins. As for Russian subs patrolling in our back yard, probably happening more than you read about. I’m sure we are doing the same with our subs. The cold war isn’t really over- just more complicated.
Don’t worry, they won’t be able to highjack a tug. They can’t even get to onto the dock with out a TWIC card.

Oh my, now I feel soooooo safe!!!
