Rum

So what are your favorite rums? A quick search for “rum” did not show up any threads on the subject.

A friend recently gave me a bottle of Ron Zacapa, a rum aged at 7,000’ in Guatemala. Wonderful sipping rum!

Drank a lot of Barbancourt rum in the Bahamas, frequently in Goombay Smashes, but it is a great sipping rum, too.

And yesterday I came across “Shellback Rum”. Talk about a gimick! But it worked - I bought a bottle for a friend who did the crossing last year.

A great standby is Mt. Gay Rum, with tonic and lime. Of course, it is above 90 degrees, then gin becomes an option…

Well if you’re a sailor there’s always Screech and Kraken. Anything spiced and dark is fine by me.

Sailor Jerry’s

I like the Sailor Jerry rum as well minus the morning after effects.

I like Vizcaya for drinking neat or on the rocks. If I’m mixing I use palms; I like the dark flavor of both of them.

Ahhh…Mother’s milk!
There are several very good rums throughout the Carribean. The best sippin’ rum in my opinion is Flor de Cana from Nicaragua. Other mixin’ rums that come to mind are Brugal and Bacardi. Colombia has some good rums. Centenario and Thres Esquinas are pretty good.

Sailor Jerry’s or mount gay black for mixed drinks, orocono from brasil for on the rocks

Had some Shellback last week. The spiced was just OK and the clear was awful.

My new favorite is Treasure Island. 2/3rds the cost of Captain Morgan and tastes just as good if not better.

Sailor Jerry definately my favorite.

I’ve been meaning to try Kraken…maybe this weekend!

I don’t have to think twice on this one- Ron Del Barrilito, 3 Star. Puerto Rican rum, hard as hell to find but so well worth it once you do. Straight up or on ice is best. Second choice, Mount Gay Extra Old.

I’ll take Pusser’s and Lamb’s Navy Rum of course. Neat or with tonic and lime…

I never realized that there are American Rum distillers until just now and whattya know? Almost all in Massachusetts!

United States

Berkshire Mountain Distillers (Great Barrington, MA)
Bully Boy Distillers (Boston, MA)
Maui Dark Rum (Hawaii)
New Holland (?)
Privateer Rum (Ipswich, MA)
Ryan & Wood (Gloucester, MA)
Turkey Shore Distilleries (Ipswich, MA)

time to pipe “up spirits” and “splice the mainbrace” lads!

DAMNED! We need Captain Kenneth R. Force USMS and the KP Marching band to play us some Royal Navee toons right about now. Well there’s always the EweToobs so take it away maestro…

Now if noise that doesn’t want you to pound some rums, I don’t know what would!

MY GOD HOW I JUST LOVE THOSE GUYS AND GALS…LET’S REALLY HEAR THAT APPLAUSE!

crushed Ice
1 pinch Sugar

Mixing instructions:

You gonna be serving em on the inaugural cruise of the new gCaptain flagship?

If so am I invited? PLEEEEZE can I come? I promise to behave myself if I am…at least until the end of the 2nd hour when I figure everyone else will be so smashed that nobody will care how much I drink, swear and rant! I also promise to bring many dark haired bi-hookers if that helps? My treat!

.

Whalers Rum or Sailor Jerry

Sailor Jerry and ginger, wedge of lime. Mount gay as a substitute. Kraken is good too, haven’t gotten bombed on it so I can’t say how it goes down in "volume. "

Most rum I drink is “house” rum in $2.75 pint glass drinks, don’t as me how they do it but they are furiously strong and taste great. Only one establishment I frequent does it such. Gladly take anyone there from here to see first hand!

Where is this fine establishment with $2.75 pint beverages?

From the 1978 “Yachtsman’s Guide to the Bahamas”:

GOOMBAY SMASH

2 shots coconut rum
2 shots Mount Gay rum
2 shots apricot brandy
1 egg
pineapple juice to taste
Blend all ingredients and pour over ice.

As I recall, Wally Smith at the Conch Inn in Marsh Harbor (and his two daughters, Barbara and Maureen,) used Barbancourt rum rather than Mt. Gay.

This is the only recipe for a Goombay Smash that calls for a raw egg. All the new ones avoid the egg. Hell, there is plenty of alcohol in the drink to kill any salmonella

I like about any rum, but “10 Cane” is one of my favorites, very smooth.
