This might be helpful for those determining if their ECS is compliant for carriage: https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/DCO%20Documents/5p/5ps/NVIC/2016/NVIC_01-16_electronic_charts_and_publications.pdf
I’ve never found that useful because I’ve never been able to find any listing of RTCM classed ECS units. How do you determine if your ECS is classed?
The tug owners think that any ECS is ok, as long as there are two separate systems. Typically, one desktop with a monitor and a back up laptop. I’ve seen USCG letters that appear to say that as well.
The USCG during Subchapter M COI inspection accepts any ECS that you show them, provided that you have two separate systems. At least that’s my experience.
We now have minimal paper charts for the US which are not corrected and are stamped “For reference only.”
The clear majority of boats have Rosepoint, many have Nobeltec Time Zero, a few have both.
Some smaller tugboats have Garmin and others. I don’t know if the USCG accepts those or not. They must because I still see them on Subchapter M COI boats.
I can only think of one tug company that equips it’s tugs with ECDIS - Navisailor 4000.
Canada only accepts ECDIS, so we also have corrected paper charts for Canada that are seldom taken out of the drawer.
