Roger Ebert got it - Movie Battleship, 2 1/2 stars

Two and a half starts is is about right. I’ve posted about the movie a couple times. I enjoyed it., or at least parts of it.

Ebet’s review; “Transformers” with better characters and a third act

Review is from 2012, just stumbled across it the other day.

The little kid in me likes the movie too. Best part for me is " we need to borrow your boat" with AC/DC blasting. I know that’s not even close to the procedure for getting that ship U/W, but it’s emotion stirring as it’s time to go kick some alien ass.

It was a good, mindless, movie. The open ocean scenes of the warships were cool as was getting the Missouri underway and its fight with the alien ship.

There’s some good scenes in the movie with the fireballs and so forth as Ebert mentions.

The scenes I liked the best were the interactions between the retired Navy and the current Navy sailors. I sailed with some of that older generation early in my career.

I thought the movie nailed it with regards to the retired navy older generation’s appearance, language and attitudes and so forth .

Made me feel a little nostalgic about sailing with those old-timers. Reminded me in particular of one of my first AB watch partner who had sailed in the Atlantic convoys, He was very matter-of-fact about his experiences.

The “We need to borrow your boat” scene.

That montage cut a month’s worth of prep and work by third party vendors down to 30 seconds.

And THAT’S assuming these museum ships even still have engines and guns etc, which I’m fairly certain they don’t. ROS vessels are maintained year round and they can still barely breakout when called.

The Ludington-Manitowoc car ferry definitely spins on the hook making her berth…but not quite at Hollywood movie speed!

Single rudder, twin Skinner Uniflow engines…half ahead to half astern in under 8 seconds.
