Civil rights leaders? Unlikely. More like fighting commanders in times of national need. But don’t confuse warship naming policy with support ship naming policies. My preferred policy position would be more such ships named after more war related matters and no ships named after living persons.
Noted. Thank you. Are there any more?
One judge shouldn’t ‘give’ you anything when he’s on a bench of nine. So is it ok to excuse his deliberate pack of lies because he judged correctly in an important case?
All of them were civil rights leaders too, Lincoln and Eisenhower chief among them. Lincoln wasn’t even really a “fighting commander” either, unless you want to call FDR a “fighting commander” too.
In this class? Not yet, and probably not ever depending on what Hegseth renames them all after. Do you have any you feel are worthy of such an honor? If you feel the ones who exist are unworthy, who do you think should replace them?
He was the one responsible for arguing that the case should be unanimous in favor of Brown, winning over the dissenting justices. In that case, he did “give” the country that as opposed to a split victory.
They may not be done renaming..
The documents obtained by CBS News also show other vessels named after prominent leaders are also on the Navy’s renaming “recommended list.”
Among them are the USNS Thurgood Marshall, USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg, USNS Harriet Tubman, USNS Dolores Huerta, USNS Lucy Stone, USNS Cesar Chavez and USNS Medgar Evers.
CBS News found that a December 2024 web article from Naval Sea Systems Command about the laying of the keel for the future USNS Thurgood Marshall has been deleted.
And this during the high holy month of Gay Ramadan?
Renaming ships is bad, even when we all know that the ship in question was named after a man because of where he liked to jam his genitals, and maybe a little because he preferred underage teenagers when doing so.
Doing so as a political statement also normalizes doing so as a political statement.
I don’t want to see the Bob Hope become the USNS Rachel Maddow or USNS Margaret Sanger down the road.
In the grand scheme of things it makes no difference what their names are as long as they get the job done. The average taxpayer couldn’t tell you the name of a single active US Navy ship or how much it cost so it is all much to do over nothing.
I served 28 years in the US Navy, and as a proud Mustang SWO, these ships brought no dishonor to THIS naval service. YMMV as an RAN vet.
I find much more dishonor in a CinC who is a heel-spur, draft dodging scumbag. He never understood the military and has disparaged many of this nation’s great military heroes.
My dad was drafted in 64 and was passed over for heel spurs and flat feet and received the same 1Y(?) classification Trump received, does that make him a draft dodger too? What about people who had deferments for “asthma”?
What is “woke” about naming a ship after someone who worked for basic equality for a marginalized group? Harvey Milk was more warrior than Hegseth will ever be.
He was also a pedophile who groomed and gave drugs to a teen boy until he agreed to become Milk’s live in chew toy for a time.
Interesting hill to plant your flag on. Looking forward to when you reply that this was the practice at the time, totally normal, the drug addicted boy was asking for it, etc.
He was a scumbag predator who deserved a bullet in his brainpan and so does anyone who makes excuses for pedophiles and other predators.
Nice friggin hero you chose, pal. Was Bill Cosby out of network?
It wasn’t the ships that brought dishonour - I didn’t say that. It was the decision to name them after this Dem cause célèbre. The decision was to rub main stream American opinion’s noses in the mud. The decision was made to not-so-subtlely attack the generally conservative nature of suburban America with a particular twist of the knife for conservative Jews and Christians … oh and Muslims too, as it turns out.
Can’t translate that, sorry.
Strangely he seems to be very well received by ever gathering of servicemen whenever he shows up. How do you explain that? Do you really think they stage the reactions of the Army v Navy football game?
Did he surrender Afghanistan to a bunch of Taliban goat f***ers and allow the slaughter of his own soldiers and marines in doing so, leaving behind the full range of munitions for several national armies and fully equipped air bases?
Not so. He’s disparaged heroes who return and become turncoats of the John McCain type. He’s going against Gen. Milley, a traitor who told his Chinese counterpart he would warn him if ever the crazy president decided to nuke China, which seemed likely in Milley’s woke brain. Each one has a story … with two sides.
You might want to look at the date on this and who was in office to negotiate the withdrawal before you start throwing stones there… because he did indeed “surrender Afghanistan…”
Nor you, it seems. Be prepared for much more rubbing of noses in the mud too.
He wanted out of Afghanistan. Not surrender. We all did. Even you.
Trump wanted a staged withdrawal and proper handover to Afghan government forces and assurances that the Taliban wouldn’t take over. Read the f**'ing plan you sent.
Is that what Biden did? Nooooooooo. He fled. Abandoned the one defensible air base at Bagram from which he could conduct a methodical withdrawal from a secure location and tried to do it from the streets of Kabul teeming with nasties and a gazillion hopeful refugees clinging desperately to the wheels of aircraft. A disgraceful display of military madness well deserving of military retribution.
Those US soldiers killed there are the blood on the hands of Biden and his generals and Secretaries of State and Defense, not Trump. Biden showed no shame. How would he even know? His brain was elsewhere, possibly in a jar on the shelf of the Smithsonian for future dissective analysis. He certainly wasn’t using it.
And all you Lefties cooed and clapped at the magnificent achievement to end a long war but looked the other way at the slaughter of your own soldiers, mere collateral damage. A sad necessity. Who the hell cares about a few grunts?
Retribution awaits for the culpable in that one. Wait and see.
I’m pretty sure there’ll never be an aircraft carrier, USS Joe Biden. Maybe a harbour sullage barge would befit.
