They’re working on it, Jeffrox, and you can expect to see something very soon. It’s called a <strong>Merchant Mariner Credential </strong>and they’re going to combine everything (license, Z-card, STCW letter) into a passport-style book. The only question left to answer is if the CG intends to show even a little bit of regard for the expressed wishes of the many licensed mariners who want to keep their traditional paper licenses, at least on an optional basis. There were many comments against doing completely away with the paper licenses, so it isn’t like the CG doesn’t know how we feel about it. Time will tell…
We should make a deal with the Coast Guard. They’ll give up their diplomas from the Academy, and get a little book instead, and then so will we.
Sure seems easier to me. Rather than a package of licenses and certification sheets and STCW endorsement and such. I don’t care about a couple of pretty pictures, I’d go for convenience. Let’s hope it’s pocket size.
