Apparently, not even POTUS’s supporters are buying what he’s selling…
From Dana Milbank this morning [edited for length]:
For three years, President Trump told his supporters that the federal government perpetrates hoaxes and frauds, that the media produces fake news and that nothing is on the level except for his tweets. He did the same with the novel coronavirus, portraying it as an ordinary flu that would “disappear” and accusing Democrats of a hoax and the media of exaggerating.
Belatedly, Trump has begun to speak the truth about the virus, which by some estimates could kill more than 2 million Americans without attempts to control it. After an abrupt change of tone Monday afternoon, Trump continued to say the right things, using the same word on Tuesday that former vice president Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron have used: war.
“We have to get rid of this, we have to win this war, and ideally quickly,” he said in the White House briefing room. “Because the longer it takes — it’s not a good situation. And I’m not even talking about the economy, I’m talking about the lives of a lot of people.”
But Trump’s has left behind one group of Americans that will be difficult to convince: his own supporters. Their alternative-facts diet has left them intolerant of anything the government and the media feed them.
An alarming new poll from NPR, PBS NewsHour and Marist shows that the number of Republicans who believe the virus is a real threat has actually fallen over the past month, from 72 percent in February to just 40 percent now. A majority of Republicans now say the threat has been blown out of proportion — more than double the 23 percent who said so last month.
You’re correct. I was thinking about the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission in 2010, upholding the rights of corporations to make political expenditures under the First Amendment. It was actually on Obama’s watch.

Fox News changed their tune a few days ago, then Trump switched:
This is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic," Trump said at a press conference with his coronavirus task force. “All you had to do was look at other countries.”
All the R’s should be falling in line fairly quickly.
You can’t make this stuff up…
But unfortunately for the USA, he does make it up and his “base” of ignorant cult members are all too willing to drink his Kool-Aid.

When the economy was doing great and unemployment was down, thanks chiefly to things set in place by the previous two administrations (notice how I gave “W" credit for TARP righting the last recession), POTUS45 took all the credit. His supporters said he was the strong leader America needed to cure all the evils in the world. Mainly, repelling the diseased horde coming from south of the border.
Now the shit has hit the fan, and WE are the diseased horde NORTH of the border (I know one guy who has fled to Mexico for the duration. Do you think he is alone?). And now when real leadership is needed, what do we get? 1) Obama is blame. 2) POTUS knew it was going to be a pandemic before everyone else. 3) You get some money, you get some money, and YOU get some money!
Everything will be OK. I do believe that. But I’ve even stopped laughing when the guy talks. He has become eminently ignorable.
Am I on gCaptain or DU? Not much difference these days. Don’t worry comrades! Uncle Joe will save us from the orange man!
If you mean that murderous creep known as the man of steel, fortunately he died quite a while ago so we can piss on his grave.
If you visited any conservative or slightly right leaning forums or comment sections during the Obama years you should be accustomed to the irrational political hysteria. Any thing bad that happened was Obama’s fault & anything good (if any) didn’t have anything to with Obama & all the credit belonged elsewhere.
My philosophy is this, never try to convert Muslims, Christians, Atheists, an animal rights activists, climate change deniers, environmentalists or political zealots. These people form their opinions from a part of their brains where logic & objectivity has no place. Let the haters hate. Actually it’s good for their psyche & our society as a whole to let them vent.
Well, the Donald the Orange just confirmed it out loud in front of reporters and TV cameras … he is going to bail out the cruise industry.
With the probability of millions of American taxpayers unemployed by a pandemic he called fake news, he wants to dump American cash into the pockets of the cruise industry parasites.
Boeing is already seeking a $60 billion hand out.
Boeing needs to turn out ventilators and mobile ventilator wards toot-sweet. Engineers and workers sidelined. Get them in the game.
It could/should be done but don’t expect them to volunteer. They’ll have to be pushed using the Defense Production Act.
For those who see Trump as a dictator in waiting, the DPA door is wide open.
Most of the cruise lines operating out of US ports are US owned and traded on the NYSE. They contribute to the profitability of US investors, stock brokers and hedge fund managers. (+ some 401K holders?)
These cruise companies are managed from offices in the US by US citizens and residents, paying US taxes on their income and spending money in the local economy.where they live/work…
Besides. not all “guests” are of US origin. Foreigners traveling to/from US cruise ports to join cruises, spending money in the US in the process.
Here is an estimate of the Cruise Industry’s contribution to the US economy in 2018:
Have seen very few with a USA flag or painted on their rear end “Wilmington , Delaware” . Do they contribute by buying goods ,sevices and logistics while in our ports? Yes they do. Once that ship sails, it takes the revenue with it without putting more in the USA kitty. Via taxes.
What CLIA doesn’t tell you is that the number of taxpaying American employees is incredibly small, a microscopic percentage of total employees. Take Carnival for instance, even after paying tens of millions of dollars in fines for environmental crimes, they took in close to $20 billion in 2018. They employ something around 4000 Americans. That doesn’t look like much of a tax base to me.
They benefit from a taxpayer funded $54 million cruise terminal renovation in Fort Lauderdale and a $263 million terminal in Miami. And that is just 2 of the ports they squat in to pick American pockets.
Carnival already got a government bailout … they made $263 million for a 6 month hotel service in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, more money than they ships would have made cruising. That plus the founder of the company renounced his American citizenship in order to avoid taxes.
And that is just one of the several pseudo American cruise ship companies. Just because this corrupt industry makes a ton of money and claim to be American businesses doesn’t mean they pay taxes, employ Americans, or contribute anything to American society. Let them pay their own way, they can afford it.
