State of Indiana may not be the first place you think of when it comes to shipping ports:
Northern Indiana boasts the largest US port with access to the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway and US Inland River System, and it also provides multimodal connections to 16 railroads in the Greater Chicago market. The portâs grain operation includes storage capacity for 7.2m bushels of grain, 200 railcars and 20 barges.

Manitoba must prepare for year-round Hudson Bay shipping access, port owner says
Port of Churchill boosts railway access, critical mineral storage capacity
Year-round shipping access through Hudson Bay is a possibility that Manitoba needs to get ready for, and the head of the group that owns the Port of Churchill says itâs possible to strike a balance between environmental concerns and tourism interests.
Trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. have sparked renewed interest in the Port of Churchill, with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew saying it could be a good option for increased trade with Europe and expansion could fit with the federal governmentâs plan for nation-building infrastructure.
The port, which has a brief operational window each summer, is owned and operated by Arctic Gateway Group, a partnership of dozens of First Nations and Hudson Bay communities.
The Port of Churchill sent its first Arctic supply ship of the season over the weekend, carrying supplies such as construction equipment, essential goods and building materials to Nunavutâs Kivalliq region, the portâs ownership group says.

Chris Avery, Arctic Gateway Groupâs CEO, said University of Manitoba researchers expect climate change will completely open up sea lanes in Hudson Bay within the âgeneration of our kids or our grandkids.â
âWe need to start preparing for that,â he said at a news conference Tuesday.
In recent years, the federal and provincial governments have invested millions of dollars in the railway line and port as a way to secure a trade route through Hudson Bay and the Arctic to overseas markets.

US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) has been designated to collect a new fee regime targeting China-linked vessels, as authorised by a US Trade Representative ruling. The rules are structured for rollout starting OctoberâŻ14, 2025, and will apply...
Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
Under the finalised policy, Chinese-owned or operated vessels will be charged starting at $50 per net ton, escalating to $140 per ton by April 2028. Non-Chinese operators of Chinese-built ships face lower feesâstarting at $18 per ton or $120 per container, rising to $33 per ton or $250 per container, whichever yields more
The fees are assessed on a per-voyage (or rotation) basis, capped at five chargeable port rotations per vessel per year, and apply only at the first port of call. Exemptions are granted for short-sea shipping, vessels under size thresholds, U.S.-owned ships, ballast voyages, and specialized export carriers.
Obviously trying to avoid adding cost for US export, but:
Will there be a surcharge per TEU/FEU added to the freight rate?
Will this extra cost on goods delivered to US ports be added to the retail price?
Will anybody add a similar surcharge on US owner/operated vessels calling at foreign ports?
PS> No use to just penalize US built ships for obvious reasons.

Not Port news but Port history.
Oslo havn, 1957:
The film presents the Port of Oslo with loading, unloading, transit, onward transportation, etc. The film provides a good insight into the loading and unloading methods of its time and other routines surrounding shipping traffic. Director: Ragnar Sørensen.

Sorry, no English text available, but for those of us who have live awhile, the pictures may bring back memories of calls in ports in other parts of the world as well.
PS> For me it reminds me of calls at Oslo port a few years later than this film shows (1960 - 62) onboard the Wilh. Willhemsen ships Tamesis, Teben and Teneriffa,
(Very similar to those WW ships seen here).
It brought back memories of simpler times.

âFor the first time in a generation, the Port of Los Angeles plans to build a new container terminal to meet global supply chain demand for decades into the future,â said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. âThe development of the cleanest terminal possible would enhance our efficiency and sustainability while creating new jobs in our communities.â
The Port of Los Angeles handled 10.3 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in 2024, its second-busiest year on record and a nearly 20% increase from 2023.
LA is not the only port looking to increase capacity to meet future demands:
For every major initiative, impacts naturally follow. This is no different with the Santos 10 Container Terminal.
