PMI Workboat Academy

I’m considering a career change at the ripe old age of 36. I’m a long time sailor and fairly experienced with boat handling up to about 50 feet but have no commercial experience.

I’ve looked very seriously at PMI’s Workboat Mate program and would like to hear what your experienced are with both the program and its graduates. Also, and advice or wisdom you may have about the industry in general, specifically about tugs on the west coats (I’m based in Seattle) and the long term viability of the industry.

If you attended the workboat mate program, I’d love to hear your impressions and experiences.

Thanks in advance for any information you could provide.

HI,
The short version is that I’m working as a Mate after completing the program, and I did it at 45. Younger would be easier, glad I worked for a big company through the program, very happy that I am not working for them now. Jill Russell is a SUPER person and it sounds like she has some great plans for the program. I only wished that their had been a DP component to the program…
