No it will look like Paul saving the whale from a Liquid mud spill!!
Depends upon what the career is, how motivated, how good a job you do, and if you have a bad attitude.

The ink is relatively immaterial to a seafaring job. However some in HR will ignore you upon application. Probably 50/50.
Thanks for your feed back mate

Nothing like that i love my tattoos. All I wanted to know was does having visible tattoos not offensive in any way cause any problems ??? anyways thanks for your comment
I don’t need a photo, their gay, and nobody will hire you
first of all try to type correct … its not their … its they are … secondly i just ask question if having visible tattoo will cause any problem … never in my question i asked your opinion about my tattoos … so back off … and talking about if someone will hire me or not … i will make you eat words shortly …
Agreed. Or better yet, by a tshirt and shorts. Anything that can’t be easily covered is an impediment of some sort, period.

We are often judged by how we look. Sorry, but true. Sure, once your foot is in the door, if you are a good employee, you’re good to go… But,
we live in a judgemental and class layered world. The % of CEO’s with tattoos is gonna be awfully low. Ok, maybe you don’t want
to be a CEO…the % of millionaires with tattoos is gonna be pretty low in comparison to the % living in subsidized housing… Sure
Snoop Dog and…the Rock have bucked this millionaire trend…but go a bit farther…the % of people earning over $250k US/year with
tattoos is gonna be much lower that the % for those earning less that $50k… it just is what it is… it either matters
to you or it doesn’t.

As was said above, if you care what others think, don’t get tat’s.
i don’t care what others think … i don’t understand what made you to assume that … what actually my question is that having visible tattoo of respect and cherish on my hands will harm any of my chances with good companies ??? thats all i am asking … i dont find it offensive in any sort … and i am just asking for your feedback on that …
You guys are ridiculous. On a daily basis how many people do you come in contact with that have tattoos? Lots I bet, and I also bet you don’t say shit, call them gay or stupid. Are they family members? Friends? Wife/girlfriend with a tramp stamp?

Opinions aside, the guy asked if he’s allowed to have visible tattoos (albeit after the fact but hey…). Answer the question, or don’t and move on.
Thanks for understanding my real question … i guess others could have also done the same …
I have a full sleeve in my left arm and it has not been a problem for me. I have also been with my company for almost 8 years and when I got hired my sleeve was not finished.

I am sure you understand that most people will judge you for the tattoos you already have or will get (if you didn’t you would not be asking if they are a problem). So my advise is to make sure that your tattoos are something you can be proud of and happy with! Because they WILL affect first impressions!!

Good Luck!!
sorry if i was uable to make myself clear earlier … i love my tattoos … i asked this question because a friend of mine told me having visible tat can be a problem in merchant navy … my only question was having respect and cherish inked my hands cause any problem with people hiring me … because i don’t find them offensive in any sort … just wanted the view of other members on this

i think i have made myself more clear now and i will appreciate your comment on this … thanks for your earlier reply … cheers

Well, the British merchant navy is a bit different than the us merchant marine… Brits aren’t as fond of visible tattoos as american as per our Sonardyne tech from the UK

Yes visible tattoos can be a problem!
Dangggggg! Good thing I did not get anchors on the back of both hands with chains coiled up around each arm. Sounded really cool when I was in the Phillipeens drunk on shore leave. But a guy was ahead of me getting this really cool Liyger on his chest and puking all over so I decided against it.
I love it - thanks Rebel-Rider

Shoot, I got tatts, both arms, both legs, no one ever said boo to me.

I have tattoos, but none of them are visible in work clothing. People, especially in the office, may judge you for them, even if they are not offensive, regardless of your credentials, work history, etc. If you reasonably can, I would recommend covering them up for an interview. On the boats themselves, I haven’t seen much of an issue.

When I started my life as a Merchant Seaman, a half century ago, most of my shipmates were from the WWII era, many had tattoos. That was during the last great era of the US Merchant Marine.
BTW, doubtful anybody said a word to Admiral Bull Halsey - from the book Admiral William F. Halsey Jr. “Tough, Tattooed and Scrappy.” However, times have changed drastically since those years, today, TheMate, I agree with your post.

Dude, it’s an employee pool full of dirty scoundrels. You should be fine with tattoos. Just don’t get any stupid shit, like and flag officer tats. Keep it classy dude. Maybe get a g captain logo. Or do what the guy who used to work for chouest did and get ECO for life on your arm!
Cheers everyone

Yesterday I had the word respect tattooed on my hand, aligned vertically with my little finger … will this visible tattoo cause any problem in my career ahead ? I also have an African symbol for patience on the back of my neck and mom dad on my shoulders.

PROBLEM ???
Seems to be working out for Mike Tyson’s career, so you shouldn’t have any issues.

Seriously? You’re going to correct him on his typo’s with yours and butchered grammar?

First impressions being what they are I think the responses in this thread are more telling than they appear. You’ll get the same responses from employers and supervisors, but as with here, you won’t know until you know.

That said, a friend of mine recently posted on his facebook about tattoos, “you wouldn’t put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari would you?”

If you don’t care what others think then why are you asking a bunch of people on the Internet their opinion…

Kinda late to be worrying about this. U r a man and there r no do overs in life in most cases. Live with your decision like any real captain. If u can not, you are in the wrong profession.
