Pardon me for sounding "bitter" but - Nome Deepwater Port Solicitation Canceled

[U.S. Arctic Presence Falters as Nome Deepwater Port Solicitation Canceled](https://gcaptain.com/u-s-arctic-presence-falters-as-nome-deepwater-port-solicitation-canceled/?subscriber=true&goal=0

From the gCaptain article:

“…the solicitation was canceled last week due to costs exceeding the available funding and statutory limits in the procurement process.”

Look, if they want it built, just get an Israeli or Ukrainian construction company to submit a bid. No matter how big, the funds will magically appear. End of story.

As a user of the Port of Nome for many years I am very much in favor of significant port improvements.

However, spending (with add ons and cost overruns) $1 BILLION dollars on anything in Nome is completely insane.

By the way, Nome is in the Bering Sea, NOT the Arctic.

The original article said “Arctic”. You have to go through the Bering Straits to “go Arctic”. We were banned from Nome because our CO was in a bar and got in a fight with a fishman and Nome banned our ship from docking there, even after we changed CO’s.

Let’s hope nobody remembers Project Chariot and thinks it’s the new cool for Alaska.

Having been to the North Slope, good to know I wouldn’t come home glowing in the dark. I am old enough to remember discussions of building a new Panama Canal using nukes. As the saying goes, “there is a fine line between a genius and a madman”. You would have to be crazier than I am to consider a plan like this.

Anchorage Daily News is reporting only one contractor bid on the project. Apparently project supporters see this not as a cancelation of the project but as a delay.

The Corps remains “fully committed to awarding a construction contract,” the Corps’ Alaska district said in the statement. It “will aggressively pursue” the project’s safe construction while protecting taxpayer dollars, it said.

Trying to imagine a contractor telling his crew “We’re going to Nome for a couple of years”.

Port development in Nome would be limited to the ice free period: June to October,

There are lots of us who have spent June through October in Nome, or places that are much less desirable (for example Bethel).

Port Clarence Coast Guard LORAN Station? About 100-miles north of Nome. No road to it. Ship or plane. And a beautiful woman behind every tree.

So far, the US Government has been smart enough Not to give the former Port Clarence Loran Station (altogether I think that’s about 1000 acres) back to the Natives. The Natives have been trying to get it back.

:joy: We had a madman DC that had a pellet gun that went hunting for some kind of ground squirrel at Dutch Harbor. 1970, there was almost nothing at Dutch Harbor but the fuel depot as far as I know, We weren’t there long enough to get liberty. Like a NASCAR pit stop, pull in, top off your tank and go.
