Overtime

What’s going on guys. I know it’s slow in the industry right now but is there any companies offering overtime or long hitches. Looking for a job where I can work 2-3 months at a time on a tugboat. I’m only 23 and I want to learn as much as I can. This 28-14 isn’t cutting it for me. Any suggestions ?

  1. You should be happy to have a steady job on a regular rotation.

  2. If you want to give up a steady gig then try great lakes dredge and dock (if they still exist) or Dann Towing (the one in Florida). Maybe try the west coast Towing outfits like Crowley, Dunlap, Western, Sause Brothers, etc. Those West coast outfits will often let you work almost as long as you want and you earn paid vacation time for each day you work.

MSC is the way to go. Stay on the ship as long as you want. OT basically unlimited if you want to work it. Everyone at MSC is making good money. Entry level new hire OS, SU, and Wipers all making $60K+. It is a job for life, no lay offs or downsizing, unaffected by economy/recession.

This is going to sound incredibly stupid, but what is MSC? I’m new to the industry and trying to learn

Not to be confused with the Mediterranean Shipping Company(MSC) which is also huge internationally, they’re talking about Military Sealift Command.
MSC operates all the non-combatant Naval ships owned by the US. Think oilers, pre-positioning, salvage, hospital ships, basically anything that doesn’t have offensive armament and thus isn’t designed to be a “Warship”. These ships are also not considered Commissioned naval vessels, wearing a USNS designation rather then a USS designation. MSC is probably the largest single employer of civilian Merchant Mariners in our industry.

There is no option to work on your time off filling in on another vessel with your company?

Unfortunately no. Happens sometimes but not often
