Operator completely unfit to run boat

Three reported collisions. Various unreported collisions and over six groundings. In two weeks. And three operators. Who the hell do I call to shut this trend down. Never seen such pathetic unprofessionalism.

YEAH! What good is this if you don’t name names? You gonna dish some dirt, you can’t only dish a little bit of it…YOU GOTTA GO ALL IN!

I’m not here to spread dirt though. I’m here to take out the trash. I’m a Deckhand who has been holding operators hands through channels. What I need is a place to report this garbage. I was raised on the water and damn savvy but I do NOT like the idea of no faith I won’t wake up to salt water in my bunk.

Nobody likes to admit that they had a accident but what I hate is inheriting issues on equipment that was damaged and not reported that make me have an accident. Not telling you to report these accidents but all I can do is shake my head at this issue and know that I do the right thing by reporting all accidents so the next guy won’t have an issue because of me. Last time I checked we are all human here.

If you don’t wake up with salt water in your bunk, someone else might. We all make mistakes, some more costly than others. The best of us learn from them. The people that don’t end up hurt or dead, or even worse, hurting or killing someone else. I recommend figuring out a way to get their identities known discretely, after you move on…unless you want to be woken by salt water.

Have you thought of calling the Coast Guard?

So your a deckhand that can run a boat better then your boss?
So your a deckhand that can run a boat better then your boss?
Seen this alot when I was in the Navy. Just because you hold the rank doesn’t mean you are the best man for the job. Politics and all…

I had a deck hand the kept telling me, “I’ve been doing this for 15 years. You don’t have to tell me how it’s done”. Meanwhile, I spent every 15 minutes cleaning up his fuck ups. If you walk the walk, then turn those worthless bozos in to the vessel manager (have proof-pics, times, dates, witnesses -document EVERYTHING). If they crucify you, fuck 'em. You’re a better man for it. If the incident is worthy of reporting to the Coast Guard…here…http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/TVNCOE/Documents/Handouts/HoumaIndustryDay/MarineCasualtyBrochure.pdf. Whistleblowers are being turned on more and more these days and it is not right. We need to get behind them.

I once worked for a company like that. I quit and found a better place to work. This is America and you have the right to walk. When I quit said company I told the boss why I was quiting I don’t think it did any good but I felt better. The next company I worked for was still cheap but I could sleep at night and the Captain deserved the title I believe he was one of the best I have worked under. I was a green OS at the time. Just my 2 cents.

During my 30 years at sea, I have left companies for their Safety Policy, or I should say their lack of a Safety Program. Some companies think that if they give little trinkets out for having a Safe Tour (no reportable injuries) they can stop all injuries. I have worked for Companies where we have been told to keep on sailing and to STOP reporting that things were very out of date, such as the Life Raft.

The last Company that I worked for was one of the better one when it came to Safety, at least to me when comparing it to others that I worked for. Most of our Captains were very good at their job. Now this does not meant that they were “Nice” Guys to work for as some of them were grade a pricks but I knew they would get us where we were going without killing someone. There were a coulpe that I had made the decision that I would quite and walk if I felt that one of these “Captains” would put us in danger. By danger I mean letting anyone pressure them into sail when they should not. If the time had come for me to do this I would have left but I would have attempted to talk to the Company First but I was prepared to lose a good job.

Luckily for me I was never put into the position of having to make this decision but it did happen to others and they paid dearly for it. NO Job is worth your life! Before anyone jumps in and says that it is up the Captain to make the decision on whether to sail or not, (and a Dumb Chief like me should keep my nose out of it), you are correct, but there are some that will allow themselves to be pressured to sail when they should not and those are the type of License Holders that should be watched.

One more thing to add, I am not saying that you should walk off just because YOU think the weather might be a little rough. I have sailed through many of a Storm but I trusted the Captain, even though I did not like him, and knew that he (or that type of Captain) would not put the crew in Danger just to make Brownie Points with the Office.

If you truly are the man you say you are, and have the evidence you claim, then drop the dime!

Otherwise shut the fuck up about having to clean the toilets

Yeah… dude…seriously.

If your point was to come on here and bitch about how you could run the boat better than the maroons in charge… well… you won’t be the first guy that thinks they can do their job better than their superior… might be true… often it’s not.

However, if you think there are truly safety issues going on… I am not sure why you don’t know the logical people to tell… but here are some suggestions.

 1. The Company/Individual that owns the boat… if they are the F-UPS… then you go from there to.
 2. USCG… you knew that right?
 3. You could also try reporting to your state’s labor safety department… OSHA etc…

Be prepared to be labeled a whiner though (by your boss) and you should probably be prepared to find other employment. It won’t be a “fun” working environment after you call everyone out.

Don’t you have a Designated Person Ashore???

Ok guys. I’ve gotten some good tempered advice from a lot of you. today I called my local Coast Guard base. They are investigating and going to make contact with me again this week. When I told them he lied and placed me as a witness to a falsified coastguard report without my permission they started listening hard. If the coast guard shuts this boat down we will likely be getting compensated. Probably jones Act in some shape. I will update you guys. Thank you.

You could sue him all you like but in the end the only winner on that one wil be the lawyers. Good luck getting cash from an operator after you shut him down. Whistleblower $ from any fines imposed by the CG is another story.

Lol you will never get another boat job again if your name is released.

You should contact CGIS. They are the investigative branch of the USCG and a bit independent of the boys in blue. You also should probably talk to a proper maritime attorney before you start making noise on the internet about suing someone. A properly qualified attorney can also probably advise you on how to conduct yourself with CGIS so that you don’t talk your own butt into a hole.
