The offshore wind projects will be managed and operated locally to create local jobs and engage local suppliers.
“It is very good news to know that Deep Wind Offshore, a renewable energy company, for the first time is going to develop a project in Chile, since the decarbonisation of the electricity sector will be key in the energy transition and in meeting our climate and environmental goals,” added Diego Pardow, Chile’s minister of energy.

Not every offshore wind project gets approved:
The Swedish government has made several high-profile decisions regarding its offshore wind future. It first granted permission to the Poseidon project and then nixed 13 offshore projects citing the country’s security concerns. Poseidon is set to...

The government stated that even though the country is reliant on fossil fuel, the 13 offshore wind projects could not get permission because the impact of the construction of those projects could impact the country’s defence ability.
“The government has noted views from expert authorities, organisations, and individuals in these cases. However, the defence interest has weighed the most,” added Romina Pourmokhtari, the country’s climate and environment minister.

In South Brittany, the project will be a floating wind farm with an installed capacity of between 400MW and 550MW. In the Mediterranean, two floating wind farms will have an installed capacity between 450MW and 550MW each while an offshore wind farm in the South Atlantic will have an installed capacity of between 1GW and 1.25GW. The technology – fixed bottom or floating – for the final wind farm is yet to be determined.

The Aussies are moving along with their OWF developments:
The government of Australia has declared a new offshore wind zone in the Bass Strait in northern Tasmania. The zone, the country’s sixth, could support up to 20GW of reliable renewable energy – more than half of the current electricity demand across...

Offshore wind developers can apply for feasibility licences until March 12, 2025, which allows them to assess the feasibility of offshore wind projects in the declared zone.
“Tasmania is already an energy powerhouse – running on 100% renewables – but the power of offshore wind could see the state produce and export even more clean and reliable energy. The Bass Strait has truly world-class wind resources, with sustained wind speeds of more than 8 metres per second,” said Chris Bowen, Australia’s minister for climate change and energy.

OWFs in Europe draws on worldwide supply of technology, equipment and services:
Dubai-based Drydocks World, in partnership with GE Vernova, has secured a contract to build and install Ostwind 4, a 2GW offshore wind grid connection that will power nearly 2m German households. The contract was awarded by 50Hertz, the transmission...

GE Vernova will supply the HVDC technology, including voltage-sourced converters, transformers, SF6-free gas-insulated switchgear, civil works for the onshore converter station, and grid automation equipment.
“This is pioneering work. We want to ensure that the entirety of the technically and economically viable offshore wind energy potential in the Baltic Sea is exploited, primarily with the help of direct current technology. One prerequisite for this is the creation of legal and regulatory conditions that enable wind farms in the waters of other EU states to be connected to the German transmission grid,” said Stefan Kapferer, CEO of 50Hertz Transmission.

The duel over US energy sources between current president Joe Biden and president-elect Donald Trump continues with wind power stocks dropping after Trump called turbines ‘garbage’ during a speech in Mar-a-Lago. Trump, whose inauguration is set for...
Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
Trump, whose inauguration is set for January 20, spoke in length against wind power and stated that the US will have a policy “where no windmills are being built” during his presidency.
He called wind “the most expensive energy there is” and claimed that wind turbines were a “disaster.”
The president-elect has had a bone to pick with wind even before his first run in office. It all stems from his fight against the Aberdeen Bay offshore wind farm which he tried to stop by claiming it would ruin the view from his golf resort in Aberdeen. He lost the court case in 2015 and the offshore wind farm started operation in 2018.
So it is not just because “they cause cancer” that he is against windmills, it is more likely because he lost his case in Scotland.

The Board was initially supposed to announce its latest round of offshore wind power agreements in December but decided to wait for what would happen when president Donald Trump took over the White House.
One of his first moves on his first day as president was to sign an executive order stopping new offshore wind leases on the country’s outer continental shelf.
American Clean Power Association CEO, Jason Grumet, said that the decision to cancel this offshore wind procurement is a direct consequence of the uncertainty created by the recently issued executive order.
