Offshore Oil Industry Has Died, What're You Doing Now?

I just left school and the tug guys I met there were awesome! Some of the best I ever met! Helped me with my studying as well as me helped them… I’m still in the oil patch, and don’t plan on going nowhere. I’ve been there for 3 years and don’t want to go to the river… And you know it’s not hard to crew boat a 170+ ft long vessel in 8 ft seas roughly 50 ft away from a platform while “1” deckhand offloads and loads 550 gal tote tanks as well as 100 barrel tanks @ 85% full of methanol. Yeah, their ain’t shit to that… It’s just peaches and cream with DP… And I would like to take this time to apologize to all the gentlemen on oceangoing tugs that hit the same waters I do!! I tip my hat to you gentlemen… To all you river rats, well y’all already know…

Not sure what context this is meant in, but I can tell you some personal stories of live boating before dp. Being able to make barges dance still tops it.
Sir you normally have some insightful things to add to the discussions, but you really stepped on your dick going off on a tirade like you did.
The point is, don’t generalize. There are good boatman and shitty boatman in every genre of this industry. That goes for you too chief cajaya.

Yep, Some don’t disconnect batteries, others do.
Women made EXACTLY the same as men and got the exact same promotions and raises.
According to you. YA, must have been a different company. Where I worked based on my first had experience many women I encountered did not want to work in the galley but we’re stuck there, men where given priority when transferring to deck or engine from galley. It would sometimes happen after a loooooooong while (like maybe a couple years long)further delaying their advancement towards licensed positions and making more $$$. One guy got hired as a cook, it took him less than 6 months to switch to engine, I never really heard of anything like that as far as women in the galley.

I never heard of a female lead engineer.

If a position even for a lesser officer opened up they would give it to a MALE with less experience and time with the company whose license didn’t even cover the vessel over a female any day of the week. Having an X and Y chromosome trumped work experience and license of any size all day everyday! Maybe it was different where you worked.

Do tell where it is, maybe I will apply there when things pick back up. One thing I missed while working there was the professionalism on deep sea ships. If I could find a GoM outfit with a professionally run operation that would be great.

If it where true what you were saying I would not be writing anything about it at all.

Well I’m to the point now to where I’m bout tired of hearing and seeing river rats talk all kinds of shit about us… I’ve had very many friends and family lose jobs, houses, everything they have worked hard to get… I’m to the point now to where I’m pissed… We are all seamen yet one sector wants to hold a grudge. Last time I checked, you get paid for your credentials… And I know that’s where a lot of the “chip on the shoulder” shit comes from. And if you have a 1600 Ton Masters, then why in the hell should someone with a 200 Ton with a Master of towing make as much… Get over yourself. Yeah I’m sure it is difficult running barges up and down the river, but I’m sure there are reasons your there and not in the blue… Whatever it may be, you chose to work in the brown water pushing barges like we chose to work offshore… Only the best have been able to hold onto their jobs out their and we will continue to be out there… An Ctony, I don’t remember what post it was but someone said some bullshit about DP and how hard it must be, that’s where that came from…

I think everyone here is totally confused about your references to river work. You do realize that the choices of maritime careers consist of more than just the oil patch or rivers, correct?

I swear to god cajaya, get the fuck over it. Every damn thread you come into it’s always a damn pitty party… We get it! You didn’t suck dick to get where you are, or maybe you did. IDK. But it’s always the same shit… Most of the shit you post I call bullshit on anyways… All I know is fellow mariners, if you continue to push the subject and comment back to her DUMB ASS SHIT, it will never stop. She is like a child, if you ignore her HOPEFULLY she will shut the fuck up

Yes sir I do…
Yes sir I do…
Then why this anger aimed just at river tug guys?
I swear to god cajaya, get the fuck over it. Every damn thread you come into it’s always a damn pitty party… We get it! It’s been quiet for a while…every now and again she pops in to remind us of chauvinism. She’s like that crazy aunt at thanksgiving that runs amok after a couple martinis and everyone just politely smiles.

So the next time a Master Unlimited gets work at your company everyone will bow and scrape and he’ll get paid double what a lowly 1600 ton master makes?

They don’t pay for your license (unless the license is in short supply) they pay for your ability. Many ATBs are run by people with “lowly” 200 ton licenses yet are bigger than the biggest American OSV and hold enough oil to buy a Chouest 312’. The guys that can do this safely deserve to get paid what someone playing a video game on the bridge makes.

I’d much rather work oilfield than push oil barges because if you spill a quart you go to jail for 20 years. I don’t know about you but I’m too pretty for prison.

Well if collectively, chauvinism didn’t almost kill me, ruin my personal life and hamper my finances, I would be quite silent about it. Most guys, if you touch even one of those things they fl!p the &$#%€ out.

Then why hold a grudge cause someone makes more money on an OSV in the gulf… You chose that, as I said earlier… You chose to work in the brown water… And the finger is at them cause they are the only ones ive EVER heard shit from… Now in that same statement, opinions are like assholes, and that’s my opinion… I do not like them because of my personal experiences… Just like crew boat people… I’m not find of them and I started my career on a crew boat…
Then why hold a grudge cause someone makes more money on an OSV in the gulf…
I never talked to anyone with a grudge, but I never talked to river tug guys either. I always heard one of two things, either “how do I get a job down there” or “I’m very happy to stay here and when the next downturn hits and you get laid off I’ll still have a job.”

Now that someone has put her on blast she is going to go find her little hole she crawled out of… Noticed how she had a comment on when you said something but not a word for me…

So you got a job at Club Eden over in Metairie?
So you got a job at Club Eden over in Metairie?
Whatever that is, no. I’m working under my license.

Cajaya, I honestly do not see how you kept from going crazy because you have had to deal with chauvinism which must be the worst thing you have ever been exposed to in your life. The deaf, blind and cancer afflicted along with HIV positive black Muslims in the south have it easy compared to what you must have been through. Your courage. perseverance and humility in the face of overwhelming adversity is something we will all remember.

I know damn well I unwired that charger and locked out the breaker. There’s gonna be hell to pay when I find out who the smart ass is that cut my lock and reconnected those battery cables.

perhaps the Bruce jammer woman of the year award for being so courageous and brave is in order.
