I’ve heard some people say that the right way to think of the US presidential election is that it is 50 different elections for each state and not as a national election, national polls in the US are inaccurate because it is not a national election. The current way gives the states with a lower population more of a voice.
The President of the European Council is chosen in a similar way, each head of government in the EU has a vote, every country in the EU has the same number of votes. Germany the largest country with 83 million people has the same number of votes as Malta a country of 400 thousand people.
A government, even a democratic government, does more than represent the desires of voters by their numbers. It also manages land and resources. I can easily imagine that new yorkers wouldn’t have an opinion worth considering when it comes to BLM or National Forests or fisheries or First Nations, whereas an Alaskan’s voice aught to be heard on these topics.
Are you referring to folks from New York State in general or just those from New York City. There are 2 reservations in New York. Approximately 60% of the state is forested. Being a coastal state, they do have a commercial fishing and seafood industry.
I guess they were busy dealing with the Schiff Show with the coupe attempt. Speaking of corruption, Why is the Biden corruption being ignored by the left wing media??..Nothing to see here…move along…
Because of the same reason every woman should be believed except for Tara Reade, Monica Lewinsky & all the women who claimed they were sexually assaulted by Bill Clinton. People only care about corruption & victims of sexual assault when it suits them.
But electoral votes per state are already based on the population of the states, and controlled by the most populous. States like CA, NY, TX have 55, 29, 38 votes respectively, while DE, VT, MT each only have 3. In MT, whether 501k or 1M people vote for one candidate, they get 3 electoral votes. I’d think they’d be better represented by everyone’s vote counting.
Maybe if electoral votes were split proportionally to the states popular vote it would be more representative. But since it’s winner take all in almost every state that’s why both candidates spent a huge effort in places like FL this week, where even if the population is split but for one vote, the winner takes all 29.
Just have to get more than 50% of the vote. In theory what would happen if the Rs started losing elections is the party would tweak it’s policies to make them more popular.
in the rest of the world with the westminster parlimentry system they look at voting regions which are boundaries not used for anything else and tweak them as each region gets a vote so merging 2 red regions into one gives a blue an advantage etc.
Crooked as hell
What Joe Biden corruption are you talking about? Anything to rival the President requiring the Secret Service to spend tons of money for rooms and golf carts at the President’s properties? Or anything to compare to knowingly downplaying the pandemic and encouraging people to spread the virus? Anything?
And what is the “coupe” you are talking about? I thought a coupe was a violent overthrow. Maybe it’s an empty phrase to rally the troops, like the “death panels” of another time?
Jesus, so tired of flag wavers who think that the fact that their 401k’s are doing well makes them great patriots.
Why has no other country on the planet adopted an “electoral college” to elect their leaders?
The people who champion the electoral college while saying they believe in democracy [majority rule] aren’t very honest or they aren’t too bright. Remind them in few years when the candidate they don’t support is elected simply by winning a few states while losing the popular vote and they will sing a different tune. The founding fathers who everyone reveres never intended for everyone to vote for president. That is known history. Things progressed over the years, eventually if you didn’t have land you could vote, later even women could vote and eventually black people could vote. Not at all what the founders had in mind. Perhaps we should regress to earlier times or else give up the idea of claiming to elect by majority while maintaining the aristocratic electoral college.
