There is a vast difference between, for example, the world of the gill-net fisherman in Bristol Bay and say, the deep-sea trawlermen of the Bering Sea even though both fit into the category “Alaska fisherman”.
The gill-net fishery is seasonal, most of the gill-net fisherman only fish part-time, it’s close to shore in 32 foot boats. The trawlermen on the other hand fish offshore round the clock, year-round in large deep-sea vessels and most only fish for a living.
Likewise the catagory “GOM mariner” encompasses a very broad range and diverse group. The culture at a work boat company is likely very different than the drill ships. Also likely a great variance from company to company and even from boat to boat. Even on the same boat not every captain is going to run the boat the same way.
I’ve met a few that actually look like this.
