Not maritime but not something new to this forum...the Confederate Flag rises again!
Maybe with the drop in oil price some companies in the GOM will look at importing some slaves again as a way of reducing staff costs.
Some enterprising individual is sure to start up a Confederate open registry!

and use out of work OSVs to ship cotton out of the South past the Union Navy blockade
and use out of work OSVs to ship cotton out of the South past the Union Navy blockade
These days it seems like a USN blockade would be more likely to crash into blockade runners by accident than to sink them on purpose. Then again, a Confederate-flagged merchie would probably spend most of its time at anchor so the crew can fish.

Hell…if they were LCSs sent after the blockade runners, they’d probably break down long before they got close enough to have a collision. Likely, the ships would be sitting in port the whole war undergoing endless repairs.

Then again, a Confederate-flagged merchie would probably spend most of its time at anchor so the crew can fish.

ANCHOR! OSVs don’t anchor, they push onto some bayou bank. I doubt any southern mariner would have any clue if they were expected to drop the hook. Anyhow, when pushed up in the mud, the crew can go “noodling” for catfish

Southerners are FUCKING MORONS!

We haven’t “pushed the mud” in 15 years. With the advent of CP and Drop/Swing down thrusters it rendered that option impractical. You haven’t been to bayou LaFlush in quite some time but they have pilings all over the place to moor to nowadays. We drop the anchor for NS5/SIP all the time so everyone gets practice.

I could give a shit what a self proclaimed “socialism/communist/leftist” living in the PNW has to say about the battle flag.

As far as racism I have lived in Va my entire life and I have witnessed and overheard more blatant racism in my travels north than I have ever heard at home. Believe it or not we all just get along for the most part.

Who says I have to get along with any of your sorry Southern asses? I am through working in your dismal swamp of backward Joe Boss loving neanderthals. Now, if only we could keep you and your most grandiose Jeaux Buttfucker off our turf it would be a simply wonderful world!

In a perfect world…But after being retired for 6 years, I’m still called in for bail-out consulting work in the PNW, NE and Gulf coast. A few months ago I spent an hour on the phone with a PNW engineer trouble shooting an IG system. It turns out he didn’t have enough strength to push a reset button to the full depth. So… all PNW engineers are limp-wristed according to your standards.

I rate ccaptain right up there with al Sharpton as far as credibility.

My Joe Boss is a New Yorker.

And I was referring to blacks and whites getting along.

Why not just go to Starbucks order a $15 coffee and smoke a doobie or two?

and yet the haters just keep hating throughout all and nothing will sway them from their conviction that the Confederate flag MUST fly DAMNED what anyone else thinks or feels! WHITE SUPREMACY UBER ALLES!

‘Have We Changed Enough?’ Nikki Haley Pushes for Confederate Flag Removal

by Elizabeth Chuck Jul 4 2015,

On Monday, South Carolina lawmakers will start debating whether to remove the Confederate flag from state battlegrounds — a move that to some is tantamount to tearing down a symbol of Southern pride.

But to others, like South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, it has become the right thing to do after photos emerged of self-confessed mass murderer Dylann Roof holding the Confederate flag. Roof, who is white, fatally shot nine people last month at a historic black church in Charleston.

“I don’t think that this is going to be easy. I don’t think that it’s going to be painless,” Haley told TODAY on Saturday in her first network interview since calling for the flag’s removal. “But I do think that it will be respectful, and that it will move swiftly.”

The Confederate flag has flown in South Carolina’s capital since 1961. Removing the Civil War-era icon requires a two-thirds vote from both chambers of the General Assembly — no easy feat in a state steeped in Southern tradition.

On Friday, pro-Confederate robocalls went out to some homes in South Carolina calling on voters to contact their state representative to “not stand with leftist fanatics who want to destroy the South,” reported The Herald newspaper in South Carolina.

But those opposed to the rebel banner are just as passionate as those who stand behind it. Last Saturday, two activists were arrested after one removed the flag from a pole outside South Carolina’s statehouse in Columbia. (The flag was quickly replaced.) Friday night, another woman was arrested for jumping the Confederate monument fence at the State House.

An anti-Confederate flag rally was planned for Saturday afternoon in Columbia.

Days after the shooting at Charleston’s Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where the victims were killed during a Bible study, Haley called for the flag to come down.

Her request prompted swift action: Alabama’s governor ordered Confederate flags removed from capital grounds, while the Virginia and North Carolina governors demanded an end to license plates showcasing the flag. Retailers such as Walmart and eBay also announced they would no longer sell Confederate flag merchandise.

“I don’t know why this had to happen,” Haley said of the massacre, which officials say was racially motivated. “All I will say is we are blessed. … You had nine amazing people welcome someone that didn’t look like them, didn’t act like them, and didn’t sound like them.”

“The compassion and the love and the outpouring across South Carolina and across this country should give us all hope,” she added.

Removing the Confederate flag is just “the beginning” of the work needed on race relations, said Haley, who was born to immigrant Indian parents.

“You always want to think that today is better than yesterday, that we’re growing as a state, we’re growing as a country,” she said. “When something like this happens, you reflect and you say, ‘Have we changed enough?’”

obviously there are many in the South who not only not believe they have changed enough but in fact want to rewind the clock back to the good old days of slavery, segregation, cross burnings and lynchings with fried chicken picnics for the kids!

HOLY SHIT! Now this is the true end of the Confederacy!

NASCAR and its tracks ask fans to stop displaying Confederate flag

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR asked its fans to refrain from displaying the Confederate Flag at its race, releasing a statement Thursday signed by tracks that host the Sprint Cup, Xfinity and Camping World Truck series.

The statement comes the day after Daytona International Speedway announced it would offer a flag exchange as it prepares to host Sunday’s Coke Zero 400. Track president Joie Chitwood said fans wouldn’t be banned from having the Confederate flag in the infield this weekend.

Last weekend, NASCAR Chairman Brian France said the sanctioning body would go “as far as we can” to eliminate the Confederate flag from its events.

Thursday’s statement:

“As members of the NASCAR industry, we join NASCAR in the desire to make our events among the most fan-friendly, welcoming environments in all of sports and entertainment.”

To do that, we are asking our fans and partners to join us in a renewed effort to create an all-inclusive, even more welcoming atmosphere for all who attend our events. This will include the request to refrain from displaying the Confederate Flag at our facilities and NASCAR events."

We are committed to providing a welcoming atmosphere free of offensive symbols. This is an opportunity for NASCAR Nation to demonstrate its sense of mutual respect and acceptance for all who attend our events while collectively sharing the tremendous experience of NASCAR racing.”

I CAN TELL YOU THAT THIS IS GOING TO CREATE A HOLY MASSIVE SHITSTORM! hold onto your hats folks…

and btw, may God smite everlasting fire and damnation upon don Vito Chouest!

I’m always amazed how people take all of this shit (or themselves) so seriously. We express our opinions and experiences. If you’re not smart enough to glean the info out of the bullshit, be prepared for a long and miserable working life. I’ve heard all the crap about us ignorant Southerners for many years. Most of the detractors are still working and I’ve been retired comfortably for 6 years.

Oh , one bit of advise my old Chief told me. “never argue with an idiot in public as bystanders may not be able to tell who’s who”!
