With the passage of the one big beautiful bill, how will the no tax on overtime affect mariners? This may have bigger impacts on people sailing for MSC, as we are hourly, and 32 hours minimum of OT per 2 wek pay period might have a large impact on our take home pay.
It hasn’t passed the Senate so not law yet. No tax on overtime & no tax on tips would be a giant windfall for the middle class & working poor. The Democrats & RINO’s won’t let Trump & the Republicans take credit for relieving a terrible burden off the middle class & food service employees backs so expect a fierce battle from them in the Senate. If by some freak chance the Democrats/RINO’s allows the common man to have a tax break by a 51 majority vote, then we’ll have to contend with rulings from a half dozen minor liberal judges who will put injunctions on these tax breaks declairing them un-Constitutional. We should also expect the media & liberals on this forum to declare hourly workers & food service wait staff getting a tax break to be the end of our democracy & comparison of Republicans to Hitler for allowing it to happen
It also allows employers to redefine the meaning of overtime and and change pay periods at will to manipulate how the OT is calculated.
Don’t forget the $4,000 deduction for elderly Americans to offset social security taxes, increaded SALT deductions so those in high taxed blue states can get a tax break & the horrible earned income credit for child care to help the working poor with child care expenses. These things, along with no tax on tips & overtime goes against everything the Democrat Party stands for!! If they wanted such unpatriotic policies they’d would have campaigned on them & put them in place when Biden was in office. Giving all these poor people tax breaks are all a part of Trump & Putin’s plan to help the billionaire oligarchs & to destroy America.
This is not going to affect officers at all practically.
If you earn over 160k a year you won’t see any benefits!!!
The devil is in the detail. Whoever put that “highly compensated employee” language in the bill is screwing a lot of workers.
As for the higher SALT deductions, it will greatly benefit the middle class & upper middle class in blue states. Concerning highly compensated employees. The number is a lot higher than $160k, read below. About the no tax overtime & $4,000 tax deduction for the elderly. It will benefit those of us with working spouses & those who help take care of their elderly parents. I work with & know many elderly mariners. I wonder if they will qualify or do they need to retire first?
From AI ablout higher SALT deductions:
Key provisions of the bill regarding SALT include:
Increased Cap: The bill raises the SALT cap from $10,000 to $40,000, starting in 2025.
Income Limitations: The deduction phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income (AGI) over $500,000 for single filers and $505,000 for married couples filing separately in 2026.
No tax on overtime benefit for anyone making over 160k
Those of us working 12 hour days for a set day rate (84 hours per week) are going to need to get our employers to change to an hourly rate with overtime.
Some prevailing wage (Bacon Davis Act) jobs require that now.
Only being taxed on the first 40 hours and not being taxed on the next 44 hours (at time and a half overtime rate) will be an incredible increase in our take home pay.
Again unless you make less than 160k you will see NO BENEFIT.
GO READ THE LAW. ITS BULL.
But is that 160k limit based off of salary or total income? Msc, base pay is 86k , but you essentially double or triple it with all the weekend overtime you work. So, does the overtime contibute to the 160k limit, or is the limit only on base salary
Wrong. Taxing authority at the federal level is exclusively within the provence of Congress. There’s nothing apparent that would lend itself to a Constitutional challenge. There might be a vague equal protection claim against the SALT provisions, but in my view this would amount to little more than a law school, academic type hypothetical.
Ludicrous. If you want to fairly argue both sides, you should be concerned with the fact that these cuts are unfunded, and are largely a smokescreen cover for the billionaire tax cuts.
The money has to come from somewhere, and if you are at all concerned about the debt deficit, this should be your focus.
The U.S. has one of the lowest tax burdens in the industrialized world, so if you want to exempt taxes for overtime and tips, you need to find a way to pay for it.
One of the legitimate talking points from the Democrats against no tax tips, overtime & on SS was it would unfairly benefit CEO’s & executives who get millions in bonuses. This $160k cap on OT & the $500k cap on SALT deductions should put the anti-labor narrative from the left to rest but probably won’t.
Interesting that when the discussion is about giving money to Ukraine, the left, even those on this forum argued we should give as much & for as long as it takes without ever asking where the money comes from but when it’s for the middle class & working poor it’s pearl clutching time, asking who’s paying for it? The same with the $400 BILLION for the very elitist, private & wealthy Harvard University, no Democrat asks where the money comes from but when the $400 BILLION is in the form of tax breaks for the working poor in the food industry & factory workers making OT the Dems are outraged.
I don’t care if I get 1 red cent from the One Big Beautiful Tax Reduction Bill, if the middleclass & working poor stops paying taxes on hard earned tips & o.t I’m 100% for it.
It is all pointless since nothing counts until the Senate makes their changes, sends it back to the House who makes more changes, who sends it back to the Senate who makes more changes etc, etc until nothing is done and they either temporarily extend the current budget or shutdown the government. Right now it all just political talking points under the guise of reducing the budget when all they need to do is let the tax cut which favored the rich expire just like they said they would do in 2017 with the Tax Cut and Jobs Act under Trump and the Republicans. Deficit problem would be reduced by about 5 trillion dollars without doing anything but what they said they would do when they passed the law and Trump signed it in 2018.
It always amazes me how a NY billionaire who has never driven a car and only has a loose understanding of the word “groceries” has convinced Republicans he is somehow a champion of the people. I guess it’s no different than a draft dodger convincing people he’s a tough guy or a felon convincing people he’s innocent (the prisons are full of people claiming persecution, yet he walks free). Cultists gonna cult.
How many people does the Biden Crime Family employ? My guess is Trump employees alot more with his Construction Business!!
Now, what crimes would those be? I listened to months of Senate hearings investigating for crime in the Biden family. Good for them. What did they discover?
Hunter Biden was convicted of three things. Here, from the AP: " three felony charges related to the purchase of a revolver in 2018 when, prosecutors argued, the president’s son lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by saying he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs."
That’s it? That’s what makes a crime family? Cheeto jesus himself was shown holding a gun as a convicted felon. Which would be just one more of the many felonies he is already convicted of. So, are you calling it the Trump Crime Family?
But I admit I could be wrong. There could be many other felonies and misdemeanors that the Biden family are convicted of, hence earning them the sobriquet “crime family”.
So, list them here. List all the convictions. Every bribe they got paying for covering up fucking a porn star. Every dirty business deal. Every defamation case they lost. Every phony university they got caught swindling the public with and had to pay restitution for.
The Biden crime family must have been convicted and found liable in a court of law for dozens of such cases.
So, trot them out here.
They could not be convicted because Dimentia Joe had an Aid use the Auto Pen and Pardon his Family for past and FUTURE Crimes. But, nothing to see here, right? Just move along and blame Trump for everything!!
Exactly
Dude, I was just hoping you could point to all the crimes and misdemeanors the Biden family were convicted of.
I’m sure there’s lots to see. The Senate spent a year investigating it all. There must be a record of all the crimes. Maybe you don’t have the time to look up all the convictions. I get it. It’s a time constraint thing. So, let’s farm it out:
You kids out there: jump on the internet and find all the convictions for felonies, misdemeanors and civil law judgments against the family of Joe Biden!
If you win the big sweepstake you can then rightfully call them the Biden Crime Family!!
[Terms and Conditions: Must be in excess of the crimes and misdemeanors of the Trump Family, which includes:
*34 felony convictions
*felony hush money with porn star etc. etc.
*Liable for swindling the public with a phony university
Since this a crime family, throw in the father of CJ’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, also convicted of multiple felonies, including witness tampering, entailing (from Wiki)… hiring a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, arranging to record a sexual encounter between the two and send the tape to his sister… Class act!
If you forgot Jared Kusher he’s Trump son-in-law who personally pocketed $2 billion from the Saudis after being in government and dealing with the same Saudis. ]
