Skipsteknisk AS has been awarded a contract for the design and engineering of a new coastal, fishing and marine research vessel for New Zealand. NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Limited) is planning to replace the now 39-year-old vessel “Kaharoa” with a new vessel. The contract was won in a public tender round.
General manager Hans Ove Holmøy in Skipsteknisk states that the contract includes design development, as well as documentation for a later shipyard tender in the first phase. In the next phase, the contract includes class and construction drawings, as well as construction management at the yard.
The new vessel will be arranged for different types of research assignments. The main function will be fisheries research, but the vessel will also carry out general marine research, environmental research and buoy management. Furthermore, the vessel will be equipped for operation of underwater robots and autonomous vessels.
