MSC to MEBA

Has anyone on here made the transition from MEBA government fleet to MEBA deep sea? I would like to hear your comment, opinions, and guidance on the process.

I did it. It went fine. Tankers & box boats. Steam & motor.

Was there a significant difference in pay switching from gov fleet to tankers/box boats? Considering a move to MEBA and would like to have an idea before I walk in.

Well for one thing, you can make as much money as you want. MEBA won’t stop paying you when you hit the federal cap.

Fewer people onboard to help. More overtime, no port time, better vacation, ships in worse condition, better pay.

I would not hesitate to switch if there’s jobs on the board. I did it when a Group 1 card needed 11 months in the Hall to get a top shelf relief job on a box boat. Times have changed and you need to go to Hall and see for yourself

Used to be MSC and NOAA wage marine could move to MEBA group 2 without initiation fee after 2 years while paying dues. Was a good deal at the time but I don’t know how much it has changed. What are the current rules? Anyone know?
