While the USCG is updating their exams I hope they take a look at the engineers’ exams as they are seriously outdated. If one examines the loss of power incidents resulting in collisions and allisions one can see a lack of knowledge or the ability to quickly diagnose problems with the interface between the newer computer control systems and the mechanical plant. This requires a level of knowledge that is not reflected in the USCG exam or the engineer exams of other countries also for that matter.

I have worked with a few Eu chiefs, they knew PLC’s etc very well, under 50yr old so no issue running a modern DP vessel.
Wasn’t speaking of PLCs. They are on USCG exam and have been for some time
So what part of computer controlled systems are missing?
I must admit the woke green lobby has pushed medium and high speed engines in to very complex variable speed ac and dc bus systems, ( with battery) and the vendors struggle to fix them or even get them working from new as each one is a new invention.
Code being written and uploaded live during the sea trial, lol
Software cant be tested properly so its game over.
Class is left far far behind.
