I was happy to see the NMC created a 6 year grace period and mine expired 4 years ago. However I keep seeing something of 365 days sea time and I only have 255 days of seatime
Do I need 365 days of sea time to qualify for the grace period?
No. It applies to all expired MMCs.
For national endorsements, 365 days refers to whether or not you can renew on sea time alone. If you don’t have that time you get an open book test to do at home. See 46 CFR 10.227(e)(1)(i) and (ii).
For STCW, it refers to whether you can renew with shorter “revalidation” courses, if you don’t have it you need longer refresher courses. This is for Basic Training, Proficiency in Survival Craft, Fast Rescue Boats, and Advanced Firefighting.
You can renew national endorsements without renewing STCW.
