I am a senior at a maritime academy seeking a 3rd Mates ticket. We just had a career fair and MM&P reps were there. They said shipping was really good right now, lots of 3M jobs. Does this hold any truth? Or were they trying to get me to join? I really could care less what kind of ship or with what company I find work. With that said, what are some average 3M wages through MM&P? Rotations are not a concern either. Does anybody have any helpful knowledge whether joining MM&P would be a good thing for a new grad? Appreciate any feedback.
Do you want to ride the big ones? Any other questons are bs, in my view anyway.
Im not sure i understand what you mean?
He’s saying that the only way you’re gonna get a job on an unlimited tonnage vessel, with a few rare exceptions are to join MMP, AMO, or MEBA. It’s the truth of the U.S. maritime industry. Or you could join MSC I suppose.
Hey sfmariner. Been a while, and I just got my letter from IBU to take the class next month! I recently finished up my STCW firefighting stuff, and talked to a couple guys one from MM and P working for AMNAV and another I think was IBU. He said there was a lot of D cards right now which, concerns me a bit but figure I still want to go for it and check it out. Anything I need to know before or while taking the classes? I have questions, but I’m sure they’ll be answered in the class. The unfortunate thing is I don’t have the 3 weekdays off I was hoping for from my regular job, only Mondays right now so…not even sure if that’ll cut it but I’m hoping to take a few days off as well…maybe call in sick down the road. I went back to the hall a few weeks ago to update my info and didn’t see that parking area you were talking about so I was gonna ask about that, as well as if most Monday jobs are actually for Tuesday since the weekend runs into it. Also the letter I got mentioned about making it into the Hall for job call and I was wondering if I DON’T make it in do I get thrown out? Or as long as I still show up when I can, and pay the registration am I still okay? The IBU guy from my class said if I was a D card, better to keep another job for the time being so…that’s what I’m gonna do for now. Hope all is well aboard the Foss tug, really hope someday I can get out on one. Thanks for any info, and everything else you’ve provided. I really appreciate it.
Hey The Mess, good for you. Go forward with it and don’t worry about the other D cards. It will pick up in another month or so and get very busy. If it’s an early start time job on a Mon. the job will be shipped on Fri. If it’s a afternoon or evening job on Mon, it will be shipped at job call on Mon. You will be fine as long as you show up when you can and keep your registration paid.
Absolutely essential to be early for class, allow enough time to get there. Class starts at 8 am, if you arrive late you will not be allowed in and bounced from the class. You will be working on ferries that run on a schedule, if you can’t arrive on time, they figure you will be late turning to for work, be on time.
The parking is on Harrison St between the hall and going towards the Embarcadero, 2 hours free, UNFORTUNATELY, there is a shit load of construction going on around the hall and all the parking gets taken.
Good luck. Pay attention and you will be fine.
Sweet, I did a dry run the other day and drove to the city, I was about 15 min late including some stops, so I figure if I leave half hour earlier to 45 minutes I should be fine. Saw the 2 hour parking but looks like it ends at 10 although there were some spots available. I found a lot a few blocks away for 15 a day so I’ll probably just go that route now for the classes. (They said I’d need transportation.) But besides the toll plaza, everything else was basic traffic, nothing to freak out about and it was good to know the exit takes you right to the hall pretty much. Looking forward to it, can’t wait.
Hey man, just thought I’d let you know I’m on the board! Nabbed a day with Red and White yesterday on the Royal Prince. It was a good day that I sometimes thought I’d never see. Ironically I also heard back from Marine Express. They wanted me to go on a 4 hour call out in Stockton but I had regular work unfortunately. Also was wondering if that’s a no no by union standards. I’m sure it is once you’re IN the union, but since I’m not technically in, is that something I could still do to build experience and sea time? Just don’t want to screw up. Now I can go officially put something down in my profile on here under, Last Vessel I Was on.
Hey The Mess, good for you. As far as working at Marine Express, you do what you have to do to pay the bills, also any experience is good. I was recently at the hall and it is getting very busy and not enough people are showing up. You should go as much as you can so you can get your hours in. There are some runs that they want you to have 200 hours experience to be able to work them, so, the more you work, the better. You get your hours of experience in, then you are jumping over other “D” cards to work as they don’t have their hours in yet. I know everyone’s financial situation is different, but if you can go to part time in your job and work as much as you can out of the hall, you will do fine. It will be busy as hell from now to late October. If you really hustle and work as much as you can, you could be a “C” card by this fall. I’m going to send you a PM.
Now that your in, go for it. Good luck.
I recently joined mmp as a 3rd mate. However I have decided to go to grad school (which is no where near a hall) and continue my education. My question is about quitting/resigning from the union. I paid my initiation fee and 2 quarters worths of dues and have only done 1 night mate job. Will have to pay the rest of the $4500 initiation fee by the end of the 360 day limit even if I resign before hand or can I get that waived somehow?
