First time ever checking out MITAGS this summer. Not a member of MMP so this will be my first time. Expensive, but looks nice. How’s everyone’s experience been taking classes there?
Can’t recommend them enough. While it is definitely expensive, you get what you pay for.
I did my original OICNW courses there through the 2-year workboat academy and also met a lot of people doing their 6-month AB to Mate program during my classes. Top notch instructors, excellent facilities and simulators, and the lunch is probably one of the best of any school out there.
The hotel is just a hotel, and you might actually find a better deal at one of the hotels in the immediate area (within walking distance). It is in a business park, so there isn’t much in the way of restaurants or entertainment. You’re basically stuck with the on-campus food (still excellent), hotel bar, cracker barrel, or the royal farms gas station. That said, you’re a 15-minute UBER ride from downtown Baltimore (the nice parts).
I enjoyed the classes I took at MITAGS and learned some things, they weren’t just going thru the motions. As has already been mentioned the hotel is decent enough but there are other options in the area. I had a rental car when I was there and enjoyed tooling around Baltimore where I had come into port but not had much time to explore. I got confused on one venture and ended up where some of The Wire episodes were filmed, that was interesting. I’d recommend MITAGS to anyone.
It’s all in the game, yo
Very good experiences, never bad. As stated above, decent food all meals, good instructors in my experience. Amenities include adequate gym, swimming pool, bar. Summer is definitely the season to go there.
Flights to BWI are usually reasonable, too. Call the front desk and they will pick you up with their shuttle as well as get you back to the airport.
If you like maritime history, just wandering around the classroom wing is interesting; lots of models/prints/documents to peruse. Always good instructors and a solid investment in training.
I’m not union but went through the workboat academy, took a bunch of Chief Mate classes and LAP. Its worth it! Nice campus and extremely knowledgeable instructors…
Mitags does a great job top to bottom. Great instructors and excellent facilities. Ive spent too much time there to calculate including LAP and multi week ROM’s during covid. My only complaint is the prices they charge MMP members at the bar. Those prices are outrageous compared to Calhoun😳. I am not an mmp member.
I am — and I agree with you.
Thanks for all the responses. They have been great over the phone so far. Expensive, but great. Looking forward to my stay/experience there!
