Six months is BS, during NEO I was sitting next to people who have never stepped aboard a ship let alone a boat yet they were hired as Ordinary Seamen, but I transferring from inside the civilian sector of the navy with three years of federal service, an AB special ticket and 500 ton master license is hired as an Supply Utilityman. Everyone I would speak with during training and currently waiting in the pool have told me it’s not right but, its the luck of the draw as I was hired because of the need for SUs at the time.
On another note basic training is a joke, the instructors for the most part don’t care. During test all but one instructor would give us the answers to the test the other would correct the wrong answers for those who failed would pass and during practicals nobody ever failed.
But to answer your question, if you can easily obtain your previous rate then go for it but if not get the bare minimum of an MMD and medical cert. and apply. MSC loves to promote within and will pay for most if not all your training, just be prepared to wait it took me two years from date of application to be onboarded.
An AB Special ticket is kind of useless at MSC. It only gets you rated as an OS. Perm AB at MSC now requires AB Unlimited wit Deck Seafare endorsement.
I believe I need to clarify my previous statement, my current experience with MSC is they don’t look at your credentials or resume when applying as heavily as they should. Which is leading to alot of personnel being assigned billets that they are not qualified for or they are placed in the supply department when they went to school for deck and engineering and have years of prior federal service in said departments. But I digress, it comes down to needs of the command and right now they apparently need entry level SUs.
Looking to join MSC as an AB, but am wondering how the training works. I have all the sea time to make 3rd mate, But still need to take all the classes to test. I would like to sail with MSC and get my training paid for if possible. Any information on whether MSC is still paying for classes to progress your carreer? Or has that been phased out because people jump ship once they get all the classes paid for. Looking information on this topic.
